Boba Fett is one of the most popular and fascinating characters in the Star Wars galaxy. He first gained attention in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special and the films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, creating a huge impact on fans – especially when it looked like he’d been defeated by the sarlacc pit. Though the character reappeared years later in the Disney+ series The Book of Boba Fett, which didn’t fully satisfy viewers, it proved that a skilled bounty hunter can always find a way to continue his story, even if the format changes.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really excited to hear Marvel’s announcement on Tuesday: Boba Fett is coming back in a new comic series, Star Wars: Book of Boba Fett! It’s a seven-issue adaptation of the Disney+ show, written by Rodney Barnes and illustrated by Will Sliney. It kicks off this September, and it sounds like it’s going to explore what happens after Boba escaped the Sarlacc Pit and took over Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire. The big question, according to Marvel, is whether he can actually maintain control of Tatooine and keep things running smoothly.
Disney+’s Book of Boba Fett Was Highly Divisive; Will the Comic Fix Things?

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve seen stories jump between movies and TV a lot, but The Book of Boba Fett was a really strange case. There was so much hype leading up to its 2021 debut – Boba Fett’s fate in Return of the Jedi was a big deal, and The Mandalorian was still super popular, arriving just a year before. But when it actually came out, it really divided people. Critics and fans were all over the place with their opinions. What was really weird was how much the show focused on Din Djarin, Pedro Pascal’s character from The Mandalorian. Honestly, some people thought the episodes about Din Djarin were the strongest, but it felt like we were watching a bit of The Mandalorian Season 2.5 instead of a proper Boba Fett story, and the rest of the series just didn’t quite deliver.
Despite the mixed reception to the Disney+ series, Boba Fett remains a popular character, and the new seven-issue comic offers a chance to tell a more complete story – mirroring the series’ length. Even if the comic retreads familiar ground, the shift to a different medium allows for a deeper exploration of the bounty hunter’s journey. The creators, Barnes and Sliney, have also had time to further develop the narrative since the show aired. Plus, with The Mandalorian and Grogu recently in theaters, fans are already engaged with this part of the Star Wars universe, making them eager to revisit Boba Fett’s story in comic form.
Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett #1 goes on sale September 9th from Marvel Comics.
