With its beautiful Scottish setting and suspenseful plot about an approaching crime, the new thriller ‘The Dark’ looks like a show you won’t be able to stop watching.
We’ve just gotten our first glimpse at the new ITV drama, and it looks as intense and realistic as the title suggests.
This six-episode series is based on G.R. Halliday’s first novel, From the Shadows. It stars Laura Donnelly (known from Outlander) and Mark Rowley (Trigger Point) as the detectives investigating a disturbing serial killer.
The initial photos reveal Donnelly and Rowley portraying DI Monica Kennedy and DC Connor Crawford as they investigate crime scenes and explore the beautiful Scottish landscapes where the show is set.

When a young man’s body is discovered arranged in a strange way in the beautiful Scottish countryside, Detective Monica Kennedy suspects it’s the first sign of a frightening series of events that will impact a close-knit rural community.
With fear growing, hidden suspicions and secrets begin to surface, and the townspeople start to suspect a serial killer is living among them.
Monica Kennedy’s experience with the worst aspects of human behavior soon draws her into a dangerous pursuit of a clever killer. She’s the only one who can stop him from hurting anyone else.
However, when memories of her past resurface, she starts to doubt her own decisions. Will her own choices ultimately prove to be the greatest danger to her and her loved ones?
Viewers might know Donnelly from her role as Jenny Fraser Murray in Outlander, and from other series including The Nevers, Beowulf, Britannia, and Say Nothing.
Rowley is also well-known for his work in the TV series Karen Pirie, The Last Kingdom, and The Witcher: Blood Origin.

Helen Baxendale (known for her roles in Noughts + Crosses and Cold Feet) will also star in The Dark. A new image shows her character, Bethany Morgan, holding a rifle while standing outdoors.
The show hints that Bethany will be deeply challenged when Detective Monica returns, bringing a new case that somehow connects to her lost son.
Emun Elliott, known for his role in ‘The Gold,’ will play the husband of Baxendale’s character. They are both still deeply upset following the disappearance of their son.
The cast also includes Rona Morrison (known for Our Ladies), Cal MacAninch (Trigger Point), Stella Gonet (The Salisbury Poisonings), Phil McKee (The Rig), Tunji Kasim (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story), and Catherine McCormack (Lockerbie: a Search for Truth).
Gilles Bannier, the director known for his work on shows like Trigger Point, Marcella, and Blue Lights, is leading the directing on ‘The Dark’ and also serves as an executive producer. Lena Rae and Nessah Muthy co-wrote the adaptation.
Matt Brown, known for his work on shows like The Rig, Fear, and The Sixth Commandment, also served as a producer on this series.
