Rumer Willis Says She’s Grateful for Daughter’s Bond With Bruce Willis

Rumer Willis is finding a silver lining amid her dad Bruce Willis’ health battle.

Rumer Willis, daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, recently spoke about a benefit she’s experienced while her father copes with a diagnosis of frontotemporal lobe dementia.

Oh my gosh, getting to see him is just… everything! I was telling someone recently how incredibly thankful I am that my little Louetta, who’s three, actually got to meet him. It just fills my heart, you know? It’s bittersweet because I honestly don’t know if my sisters will ever have that chance, and it means the world to me that Louetta did.

The 37-year-old, whose sisters include Scout (34) and Tallulah (32), as well as Bruce and Emma Heming Willis’ daughters Mabel (14) and Evelyn (12), shared that her father is doing as well as can be expected given his current health situation.

She admitted things had changed forever. Losing her parents meant life would never be the way it used to be.

Of course, the Now & Then actress emphasized she feels luckier than most.

I really appreciate everything I do have,” she went on. “Some of my friends have lost their parents, and even though things are different now, I’m thankful for the time we still share.”

And Rumer shared that some of the changes in Bruce’s demeanor have been nice to see.

She explained that he’s developed a surprising gentleness. He’s always presented a tough exterior, but now there’s a vulnerability that his public persona as Bruce Willis perhaps wouldn’t have let him express before.

This situation has also allowed the Willis family, now blended, to grow closer. Rumer shared that she’s incredibly thankful for how everyone has come together to support each other.

Rumer isn’t the only family member to talk about changes since Bruce’s illness. Demi has shared that she visits him every week and will always maintain a close relationship with him.

Demi, who was married to Bruce from 1987 to 2000, recently told Variety that they will always remain a family, even though their relationship has changed. She explained that supporting him comes naturally because that’s what you do for loved ones.

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore first met in August 1987 at the premiere of the movie Stakeout. Interestingly, neither of them starred in the film, but Demi was there to support her former fiancé, Emilio Estevez, who did.

Bruce had recently gone through a breakup, and Demi, previously married to Freddy Moore from 1981 to 1985, was open to meeting new people.

In her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, Demi Moore (known as the Ghost star) wrote that they immediately opened up to each other about their strong desire to start a family and have children.

I was so thrilled when I heard about them! It all happened so fast – they met, and just a few months later, they were in Vegas for a boxing match and decided to get married! They actually eloped at the Golden Nugget on November 21st, 1987. But that wasn’t all – a month later, they had a bigger celebration with a proper wedding, and get this – Little Richard actually officiated! It was an amazing event, and I was so happy for them.

Although Demi later revealed in her memoir how unstable their marriage often was – including a moment in 1990 when Bruce questioned whether he even wanted to be married – they publicly appeared to be a perfect Hollywood couple until they announced their separation in 1998.

But they remained a family unit.

In 2000, Bruce told Rolling Stone that he still loved Demi and they remained very close. They planned to continue raising their three children together and felt as connected as ever, recognizing their ongoing commitment to their kids and their enduring friendship.

Demi has said she and Bruce started trying to have a child even before their whirlwind wedding.

It’s possible they succeeded, as their daughter, Rumer Glenn Willis, was born on August 16, 1988, in Paducah, Kentucky, while her father was filming the movie In Country.

For several years after Rumer was born, her parents often showed home movies of her birth when they had guests over – it was the highlight of their gatherings.

Demi recalled in a 1991 interview with Vanity Fair that Bruce stayed with her throughout all 15 hours of labor, only leaving briefly once to use the restroom.

Rumer Willis was nine years old when her parents divorced, and she still admires how well they continued to co-parent. In an October 2024 interview with People magazine, she shared that they always made sure to share family vacations, Christmases, and birthdays together.

In a 2015 interview with Larry King, she explained that her parents always prioritized family events and worked hard to keep the family feeling like a single unit, rather than two separate entities. She believes this had a significant positive effect.

Rumer had a daughter, Louetta Isley Thomas Willis, with musician Derek Richard Thomas on April 18, 2022.

The actress from My Divorce Party revealed that she named her baby after three of her father’s favorite musicians: Louis Armstrong, Etta James, and the Isley Brothers.

“She’s an absolute delight,” said Demi, a proud grandmother, in an interview with TopMob News in January 2024. “It’s everything everyone says about having grandchildren – all the fun and happiness, plus you get to relax and get a good night’s sleep!”

Rumer and Derek separated in August 2024, and Rumer praised her parents for showing her a great example of how to successfully co-parent.

Rumer Willis shared in October 2024 that her relationship with her father, Derek, remains strong. She told People magazine they’ve successfully navigated a way to maintain both a close friendship and a positive co-parenting dynamic, something they both value for themselves and their daughter, Lou.

Scout LaRue Willis was born on July 20, 1991, in Sun Valley, Idaho. Her parents chose to raise her and her siblings outside of Hollywood during their childhood years.

Not that they didn’t do glitz and glam.

Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! Demi Moore was pregnant with her second little girl, and she was SO brave! She did a totally iconic nude photoshoot for Vanity Fair in August 1991 – while she was pregnant! It was groundbreaking, seriously. Everyone still tries to copy that shoot, it’s just… legendary. I’ve seen it a million times and it still gives me chills!

“Pregnancy agrees with me,” she told the magazine. “I feel comfortable.”

Though she appeared in a few of her parents’ films when she was younger, Scout focused more on photography and music. After graduating from Brown University, she released her first album, also called ‘Scout,’ in 2022.

She’s a big fan of movies, and even before Demi Moore received a Golden Globe for The Substance, Scout praised her mother’s work in the darkly comedic and unsettling horror film.

Scout shared with Us Weekly in November 2024 that she was deeply impressed by this woman, whom she greatly admired for her beauty, talent, and authenticity. Scout felt it was inspiring that she was so willing to be herself and connect with others, and that courage impacted many people.

Tallulah Belle Willis was born Feb. 3, 1994, in Hailey, Idaho.

Bruce told Rolling Stone in 2000 that people had offered various explanations for his life, including the idea that he was receiving divine retribution. He also admitted some found it amusing that the tough action star was a devoted father to daughters. “But I’ll tell you,” he said, “I’d happily have three more daughters tomorrow. They’re wonderful.”

When Tallulah was in third grade, her family moved from Idaho to Los Angeles. This gave her a more Hollywood-centered childhood than her sisters, but it wasn’t a positive experience.

The founder of the clothing brand Wyllis has openly shared her struggles with addiction, starting with getting sober at age 20. She later received treatment for depression at 25 and then faced a battle with anorexia. In a 2023 essay for Vogue, she explained that while medication for her ADHD was beneficial, it also reduced her appetite, which made her overly focused on her weight.

Following another stay in treatment, prompted by her father’s worsening health – the family had revealed Bruce Willis’s aphasia diagnosis in March 2022 – Tallulah received a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.

She shared in Vogue that recovery will likely be a continuous process, but she’s now equipped with the skills to fully engage in all parts of her life, particularly her relationship with her father.

Tallulah shared the happy news of her engagement to musician Justin Acee on Christmas Eve. He proposed at her future mother-in-law’s house in Idaho, and a family member was there to film the proposal.

After his divorce from Demi Moore, Bruce Willis hadn’t expected to fall in love again. But in 2007, he met Emma Heming, a model born in Malta, at the gym where they both worked with the same trainer.

Bruce Willis admitted he was often unhappy during his decade of being single. He told W magazine in 2009 that he went through a difficult period and didn’t believe a relationship would fix things. He used to tell himself he wasn’t lonely despite being alone, but he now realizes he wasn’t being honest with himself.

He said his life improved significantly after he began dating Emma, who is 23 years younger than him, and seeing her regularly.

Bruce Willis and Emma Heming married on March 21, 2009, in a beach ceremony at their home in Turks and Caicos. Demi Moore, who was married to Ashton Kutcher at the time, and their daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah, were also there. Bruce and Demi later divorced in 2011 after six years of marriage.

On December 29, 2024, Emma celebrated 17 years of marriage. Having openly discussed the challenges of her husband’s health, she shared that “unconditional love” is what keeps their relationship strong.

She expressed gratitude for the experience, saying it was all thanks to him. She added that she would gladly repeat it countless times.

As someone passionate about holistic wellbeing, I’ve seen firsthand how crucial brain health is, especially after my husband Bruce faced the challenges of aphasia and, later, dementia. That’s why I co-founded Make Time Wellness, a company dedicated to supporting both brain and prenatal health through targeted supplements. And to share what I’ve learned, I also launched the Make Time Podcast, hoping to empower others to prioritize their wellbeing.

In 2023, Emma explained to TopMob News that speaking up is crucial. She believes that by taking action, raising awareness, and having conversations, we can make a real difference.

Emma and Bruce had a daughter, Mabel Ray Willis, on April 1st, 2012, in Los Angeles. Later, the family moved to Bedford Hills, New York.

In 2017, Emma told Elle Decor that she loved living where they did because it offered the convenience of city access along with the peace of a more secluded location – the best of both worlds.

Even though they lived far apart, Scout, Tallulah, and Demi remained close friends with Mabel and were all together to celebrate her sixth-grade graduation in June 2024.

“We love her!!!” Tallulah commented on Instagram. “7th grade here we go!”

When Evelyn Penn Willis was born on May 5, 2014, Bruce shared his happiness at becoming a father to five daughters.

He told People magazine that they hadn’t found out the baby’s sex until after the birth. He also shared his belief that women should lead, stating, ‘Women are simply more intelligent than men.’

Emma shared with Elle Decor that Bruce was very accommodating and happily made time for their daughters, always going with whatever plans were made.

She explained that he’s become very giving with his time because he’s been a parent for so long and is accustomed to prioritizing his children’s needs over his own.

Emma described her family as traditional, prioritizing family above all else. They focus on teaching their children good manners, grace, and the value of education. However, they also encourage self-expression in a reasonable way. Importantly, they work hard to avoid raising entitled children, striving to find the right balance in their parenting approach.

I’ve noticed Emma’s been really open with Mabel and Evelyn about their dad, which I admire. But she’s also determined to make sure they have lots of good times right now. She’s been sharing videos from their recent trip to Paris – it looked amazing! – and she’s already putting up Christmas decorations at home, which is just so sweet. It’s like she’s working hard to fill their lives with joy, and it’s really touching to see.
