Destiny Fans Aren’t Giving Up On Destiny 3, Even If Bungie Has

For the past ten years, Destiny 2 has been a key game for Sony, demonstrating that games with ongoing updates could keep players engaged. Many fans were hoping a sequel, Destiny 3, was coming as the game neared its tenth anniversary. However, Bungie recently announced that Destiny 3 isn’t planned, and the June update for Destiny 2 will be the last new content released for the game.

The good news is that Destiny 2 will remain online, so both longtime fans and new players can still enjoy all the game’s content. Still, it’s disappointing for the dedicated community that has grown around the game, and some are hoping Bungie will add more content in the future, despite the company’s current focus shifting elsewhere.

Destiny Fans Are Campaigning For A Third Game

Despite Bungie seeming hesitant, many fans are still hoping for a Destiny 3. With Destiny 2’s last update scheduled for June – ending new content releases – players are actively campaigning for the series to continue. A petition urging Sony to develop Destiny 3 has already gathered over 265,000 signatures.

The enduring popularity of the Destiny series, which began in 2014 and continued with Destiny 2 in 2017, is clear. Despite being almost a decade old, the game has stayed vibrant thanks to regular updates and new story content. While many players were hoping for a Destiny 3, continued support for Destiny 2 would have been welcome news. It appears the development team favored that approach, though Bungie and Sony ultimately disagreed.

Bungie Is Done With Destiny, Even If The Developers And Players Still Want More

Despite the team at Destiny 2 still planning future updates, Sony and Bungie had other plans. Reports suggest that Destiny 3 isn’t currently being considered, and further downloadable content for Destiny 2 has been cancelled. Although Bungie’s management had already decided to end live service updates for the game, Forbes reports they let developers continue working on the “Shattered Cycle” expansion and other planned content. Many Destiny 2 developers are being moved to work on Marathon, but Bungie is also expected to announce layoffs soon.

The surprising thing isn’t just that Bungie planned more content for Destiny 2, but that the developers genuinely believed the game still had a future. They were working on content beyond what was originally intended, including ideas that now seem unlikely to ever appear. Although Bungie says they might revisit the Destiny universe someday, there are currently no plans to do so. Despite this, it’s clear the team is still passionate about the project, even though Bungie has largely shifted its focus away from the franchise. It doesn’t look like fan demand will change their decision.

Developing a large-scale game like Destiny 3 is incredibly expensive, potentially costing hundreds of millions of dollars. Although Sony is still supporting Bungie, they seem more focused on keeping Marathon popular by adding new content for both cooperative and competitive players. Even if Destiny 3 doesn’t happen, it’s great to see so much support for the original Destiny. While many online games are facing challenges, Destiny 2 will continue to be available for players to enjoy.
