Sony is emailing and sending notifications to PlayStation 5 owners in the UK and Ireland, asking them to confirm their age. This is necessary to keep using features like messaging and voice chat.
PlayStation first announced its age verification process in April. To confirm their age, users can choose from three options: a facial scan, submitting a photo ID, or receiving a text message on their phone.
The news was met with strong disapproval, as people across the UK and Ireland were already worried about the government’s plans to require age verification for internet access. Concerns about data collection and online security are particularly significant.
Even with ongoing criticism, PlayStation 5 will begin requiring age verification for users in the UK next month. Ireland will see this feature implemented later this year, though a specific timeframe hasn’t been announced.
