Baker Alex Posner, who co-owns The Dot Cakes with her mom, Sondra, told Good Morning America that it’s “extremely surreal” how popular they’ve become. She never imagined the treats, which she started making in high school in 2017, would be such a hit.

Initially, the cakes were just made for friends and family. As Alex explained on the Invisible Ink podcast, “People liked the way they tasted, and they were cute. It just kind of was this whole packaged deal.”

Around her sophomore year of college, demand grew, and Alex realized she could turn her hobby into a business. She began noticing customers she didn’t even know, realizing the cakes had reached a much wider audience than she ever expected. “This has reached people that I didn’t even know existed, and I didn’t even know was possible,” she said.

Dot Cakes launched in 2019.
