After a decade, the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day promises to deliver a version of Peter Parker that feels true to the classic character. Tom Holland first appeared as Spider-Man in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and quickly became a fan favorite. While he’s been in six Marvel movies so far, Spider-Man: No Way Home essentially reset his story, acting as a new origin tale. Notably, the iconic “with great power comes great responsibility” line was given by Aunt May instead of Uncle Ben in this version.
In a recent interview with Empire, Marvel and Sony executives revealed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will really emphasize the core aspects of the character. According to Marvel’s Kevin Feige, this film is the first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to truly focus on classic Spider-Man themes – like Peter Parker living a modest life, monitoring police reports, and using his powers for good. Director Destin Daniel Cretton added that Peter is fully dedicated to being Spider-Man, even while dealing with personal sadness.
We’re Finally Seeing the Classic Spider-Man
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I think this new direction is exactly what the character needed. Spider-Man: Brand New Day finally gives us a Peter Parker who isn’t constantly tied to the Avengers’ storylines. Sure, we still get fun team-ups – seeing the Punisher with Jon Bernthal and Hulk with Mark Ruffalo is awesome, and Sadie Sink’s character adds a great mystery – but this truly feels like Spider-Man’s own story. He’s just trying to make it work, you know, survive day-to-day within the larger Marvel universe, and that feels really fresh.
Feige’s comment was clearly intended to generate excitement for the upcoming movie, and it likely will. However, the way it’s phrased is odd—it almost feels like a subtle criticism of past Spider-Man movies in the MCU. By calling Brand New Day a “classic” Spider-Man story we haven’t seen yet, it implies Marvel took too long to explore this direction. Ultimately, this suggests Marvel now recognizes that interconnected storylines aren’t as appealing to audiences as they once were, and they’re shifting their focus away from constant connectivity.
Peter Parker, or Spider-Man, is often plagued by misfortune – a recurring theme in the comics known as “Parker luck,” where any good times quickly fade. This idea of constant struggle seems to be central to a new take on the character, one that portrays Spider-Man as more withdrawn, thoughtful, and distanced from his friends and family, all stemming from his commitment to using his powers responsibly. It will be interesting to see Tom Holland bring this version of Spider-Man to life.
