Amazon Is Stepping in to Publish Future James Bond Games After Smash Hit 007 First Light

007 First Light has proven to be a major hit. The James Bond origin story from IO Interactive is among the highest-rated games this year, and it’s already selling very well.

It’s noteworthy that the game’s release coincides with a change in ownership of the James Bond (007) license – Amazon now owns the rights. They appear eager to publish any future 007 games themselves.

Jeff Gattis, Amazon’s head of gaming, recently told Polygon what the company plans to do now that it owns the rights to James Bond.

He explains that Amazon didn’t completely own the rights to the initial James Bond game, ‘First Light,’ but future installments will likely be developed by MGM, and potentially also by Amazon Game Studios.

IO Interactive will likely remain the developer of their games, but Amazon will now handle publishing them. IO Interactive previously published their own game, 007 First Light.

We weren’t involved in creating First Light,” explains Gattis. “We do now own the intellectual property, but we acquired it after the initial deal for First Light IO was completed.

Everyone is hoping Amazon will let IO Interactive continue developing their unique take on James Bond without getting in the way.

First Light successfully launches a fresh storyline for the character, and it’s done exceptionally well. The creators at IO likely have a clear vision for how to expand on this story and where they want to take players in future games.

The developer will likely be discussing future plans and potential new games with Amazon, and they can approach those talks with strong confidence, considering how important they were to the success of First Light.

Hopefully Amazon won’t interfere with this. I think everything will be fine if Amazon understands what IO is creating and lets them continue working independently.
