Jean Grey first appeared in 1963’s X-Men #1, initially as the team’s only female member. Common for the time, her mentor harbored unacknowledged feelings for her. While she possessed psychic abilities, they weren’t fully developed yet. After the original X-Men run ended, Jean resurfaced to rescue the second team in X-Men #101, and in doing so, became the Phoenix. This was a major turning point for the character. Writer Chris Claremont envisioned her as a counterpart to Thor, allowing the X-Men to explore cosmic storylines, ultimately leading to “The Dark Phoenix Saga” – a comic I firmly believe is the greatest Marvel story ever told.

Jean Grey has experienced a tumultuous journey, including multiple resurrections and deaths. She’s navigated marriage, discovered she’s an Omega-level telepath, and even led her own X-Team. Most recently, she’s once again bonded with the Phoenix Force, playing a crucial role at the end of the Krakoa era by defeating Marvel’s most formidable villain. Jean has always been incredibly powerful, but this latest connection to the Phoenix Force has elevated her to a new level, making her arguably the most powerful hero in the Marvel Universe.

Jean Grey Is a Walking, Talking Force of Nature

Superheroes and villains have always gotten more powerful in comic books, but we’ve only recently started calling it ‘power-scaling.’ It’s common for characters to gain new abilities or for their existing powers to grow, and Jean Grey is a prime example – her psychic powers have consistently increased over time. Lately, due to trends in modern comics, the Phoenix Force, which is connected to Jean, has become exceptionally powerful.

The Phoenix Force has always elevated Jean Grey to a god-like level, but it’s become even more powerful recently, like many forces in the Marvel Universe. Her recent comic series showcases incredibly powerful feats – she saved an entire planet from a black hole in the first issue and even fractured reality in another. The series focuses more on establishing Jean as virtually all-powerful than on strong storytelling; it’s similar to the Storm comic, but set in space. The Phoenix Force used to be about fire, psychic abilities, and control over life and death. Now, it’s a force capable of bending reality itself.

As a longtime X-Men fan, I was thrilled to see Jean Grey return after her death in the ‘Hellfire Gala’ issue! She came back to life thanks to the Phoenix Force, and honestly, the stakes were incredibly high. She was up against Enigma, who’d become this unbelievably powerful being called a Dominion – think beyond even the strongest Marvel characters, something that exists outside of time and space. It was a fight to save history itself! Jean had to stop him from altering the past and essentially wiping out mutants. Ultimately, she didn’t just defeat him, she used the Phoenix to empower all mutants, giving them the strength to finally take down this Dominion threat. It was a truly epic moment for the whole mutant race.

There’s a lot of online discussion about incredible displays of power in comics. Jean Grey, since reclaiming the Phoenix Force, has been achieving things that other heroes simply can’t. She’s portrayed as the ultimate Phoenix host – able to harness its immense power without being consumed by it. She’s performing feats we’ve never seen before in Marvel comics, surpassing even the strongest characters like Hulk and Thor. (Hulk fans are notorious for arguing about his power level, constantly comparing him to everyone!) Ultimately, Jean has become arguably the most powerful hero in the Marvel Universe, and the gap between her and the rest is significant.

Power Becomes Her

The connection between Jean Grey and the Phoenix has been central to her story from the beginning. Although some fans are growing weary of this recurring theme, it’s undeniable that it has made her incredibly powerful. Jean has always been a strong member of the X-Men, but she’s now evolved into something beyond that – whether this change will ultimately be positive remains to be seen.

Jean Grey is currently the strongest character in the Marvel Universe, and her abilities are truly incredible. Although the first Phoenix series wasn’t successful, it clearly established the full extent of her powers. I’ve always been more captivated by her internal struggle to control those powers than by simply making her an all-powerful, flawless being, and that’s why this current direction feels disappointing. They’ve given her immense power, but at the cost of the compelling conflict that made her character interesting. It will be fascinating to see how the writers handle her newfound godlike abilities and where they take her story from here.
