Players trying to buy the digital deluxe version of the game Marathon on PS5 during its recent Open Play Week were surprised to find it only cost $14. As reported by Mp1st, the game treated the purchase as an upgrade from the standard edition, so players were only charged the price difference between the two versions, causing some confusion.
Sony noticed some players were trying to buy only the bonus content from Marathon without the game itself, exploiting a loophole to get the Deluxe Edition for a lower price. They’ve now updated the PlayStation Store page to clearly state that if you try this, you’ll only be purchasing the extra features and not the actual game.
Sony explained that buying this product only unlocks the special Deluxe Edition content during the Open Play Week. After that week, you’ll need to buy the standard Marathon game to keep playing it. The price you see is just for the Deluxe Edition extras, not the full game.
A report from Mp1st indicates that the PlayStation Store incorrectly listed the base game of Marathon as included with the Deluxe Edition. This likely caused confusion for players attempting to purchase the game during Open Play Week.
Look, as a longtime Marathon player, I can tell you the community is not happy with what Sony and Bungie just did. I saw one person online put it perfectly – they said this is exactly why people have lost trust in Bungie, and they were just as shocked as the rest of us. Honestly, it’s a pretty common sentiment right now.
The discussion on the Marathon subreddit mirrored the confusion and frustration seen elsewhere. Some users pointed out that the situation was similar to a simple pricing mistake. Others wondered why Bungie didn’t create a small, separate application just for the Open Play Week, instead of impacting the main game.
If you bought the Deluxe Edition during Open Play Week hoping to get a good deal on Marathon but now don’t plan to buy the full game, Sony still offers refunds.
Marathon’s free-to-play week began on June 2nd for players on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is available to play for free until June 9th. After that, players who want to continue enjoying the PvPvE extraction shooter will need to purchase it. During the free week, players can also try out Sponsored Survival, one of Marathon’s two experimental PvE modes.
Open Play Week began alongside the launch of Season 2 for Marathon at Bungie. This update included a revamped matchmaking system and a new map called Night Marsh, which the studio says delivers a survival horror atmosphere.
