Although the next God of War game, God of War Laufey, will be a bit different, Santa Monica Studio has assured fans that Kratos’ story isn’t over. The studio recently announced it’s planning to explore the afterlife from the perspective of Kratos’ wife, Faye, but they also intend to return to Kratos as the central character in future installments.
Santa Monica Studio announced on social media that they plan to continue Kratos’ story as the God of War. They’re currently focusing on exploring the afterlife of the gods with the character Faye and invite fans to join them on this new adventure.
This post was written after Cory Barlog spoke with Dexerto, where he shared his enthusiasm for developing the character Faye and her role within the broader God of War universe. He also confirmed that there are still many stories left to tell about Kratos.
Barlog shared in a recent interview that he’s enthusiastic about Faye’s role, explaining it fits into the bigger picture of exploring diverse characters within the game’s universe. He also confirmed that Kratos will continue to be the focus of future games for years to come.
Ariel Lawrence, the director of God of War Laufey, confirmed they absolutely plan to tell stories about Kratos, saying, “We can’t not tell stories about the big guy.”
The new game, God of War Laufey, was recently revealed during Sony’s State of Play event with a detailed gameplay trailer. Players will experience the story through the eyes of Laufey – better known as Faye – who awakens in a mysterious world after the events of the 2018 God of War. She quickly realizes that the arrangements she made to keep Kratos and their son, Atreus, safe may be failing, and she immediately takes action.
The new God of War game, Laufey, aims to recapture the quick, action-packed combat of the first three games, but will tell its story in a way similar to the most recent installments. The main character, Faye, will wield a magical sword and be joined on her journey by a living, thinking Gelatinous Cube.
The studio has announced its story will broaden its scope beyond Norse and Greek mythology, allowing them to feature a wider range of creatures and beings from various mythologies.
So, I just saw the news – apparently, the new God of War game, Laufey, isn’t being directed by Cory Barlog this time around. Santa Monica Studio announced it on social media. It sounds like Barlog is stepping back to focus on the bigger picture for the whole God of War series, and he’s trusting directors like Lawrence to actually make the games. It’s cool that he’s still involved in shaping the future, even if he’s not in the director’s chair for this one.
Cory leads the creative direction at Santa Monica Studio, collaborating with game directors such as Ariel Lawrence to shape the future of the studio’s games, according to a recent announcement.
Although a release date for God of War Laufey hasn’t been announced, sources suggest it won’t be too far off. The game is being made only for the PlayStation 5.
We plan to continue Kratos’ story as the God of War. Right now, we’re thrilled to invite players on an adventure exploring the afterlife of the gods through the character of Faye, and we hope you’ll join us!
