Bungie often makes mistakes, but it’s unclear who’s responsible for this recent one.
Basically, the game developer is offering a free week of access to the first-person shooter Marathon to celebrate the launch of its Season 2 update.
Players who tried the game’s trial version found they could upgrade to the full Deluxe Edition on PlayStation 5 for $14.99. This is happening because the PlayStation Store recognizes them as already owning a version of the game through the trial.
Importantly, the product page states that the Deluxe Edition comes with the complete Marathon game, plus extra cosmetic items and other goodies.
However, people were actually purchasing the Deluxe Edition Upgrade, which surprisingly doesn’t include the complete game. This is because the PlayStation Store assumes they already have it through the free trial – is that making sense?
That page has since been updated to clarify anyone who buys it will not receive the full game at all.
The disclaimer reads:
If you downloaded Marathon during the Open Play Week but haven’t bought it yet, please be aware that…
This purchase gives you access to the Deluxe Edition content just for Open Play Week. After that, you’ll need to buy the Marathon Standard Edition to keep playing this content.
Just so you know, the price you’re seeing right now is for the Deluxe Edition stuff – things like extra skins and goodies. It doesn’t include the price of the regular, Standard Edition of the game. I didn’t want you to be confused!
This situation is frustrating because the initial description was inaccurate. Although it’s good that’s been corrected, Sony should still fulfill the original terms for those who purchased based on that description.
Ultimately, Marathon wants as many people playing as possible, so it doesn’t make sense to me why they aren’t simply giving everyone who purchased this access to the complete game.
At the very least, I hope anyone who spent money gets a refund.
