Anakin Skywalker, also known as Darth Vader, is a central figure in the Star Wars saga, and many consider him the most important character in the first six films. It’s therefore unsurprising that he’s appeared in numerous other Star Wars stories, including television series, comics, and novels.
Despite being a central figure in the Star Wars saga, there are still surprising discoveries to be made about Anakin Skywalker, even in films that have been out for years. A small detail in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith – a particularly important movie for understanding Anakin’s story – has gone unnoticed by many fans, and it actually has a significant impact on both Anakin and the events of Order 66.
Anakin/Vader Reached For His Lightsaber While Kneeling Before Palpatine

The moment Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader is iconic in Star Wars. But many viewers miss a subtle detail: while kneeling before Palpatine, you can briefly see Anakin’s gloved hand move towards his lightsaber.
As a huge fan, I’ve always felt there was something really interesting happening in that scene with Anakin, Palpatine, and Mace Windu. It suddenly hit me that Anakin was clearly still battling with himself – maybe even considering turning on Palpatine at the last second. It totally fits, because the very first thing he says after Windu gets thrown out the window is, “What have I done?” And honestly, that one line completely changes how you view the whole thing. It makes it so much more tragic and complex.
If Anakin was reaching for his lightsaber, as it appears, he hadn’t completely fallen to the dark side. This makes his transformation more complicated and fascinating than it first seems, and it begs the question: at what point did Anakin fully commit to the dark side?
Order 66 Was The Event That Finally Pushed Anakin Over The Edge

Understanding how Anakin Skywalker fell to the dark side suggests that Order 66 was the point of no return – the moment he fully committed to evil and any chance of redemption vanished. The disturbing scene of him preparing to kill young Jedi likely served to solidify that commitment.
Anakin had made many mistakes, but his actions at this point were far worse than anything before. By murdering young Jedi learners and taking part in the widespread killing of the Jedi Order during Order 66, he committed an act he felt was unforgivable and beyond repair, convincing him that there was no going back to the Jedi path. Despite this, he hadn’t given up on his plan to kill Palpatine.
Anakin Still Planned To Kill Palpatine After That

Even after fully embracing the dark side following Order 66, Anakin Skywalker hadn’t completely given up on the idea of eliminating Palpatine – though his motivations had changed. This became apparent during his conversation with Padmé on Mustafar, when he revealed he believed he could defeat and overthrow the Emperor.
Shortly after their conversation, Anakin suffered a devastating turn of events: he was critically injured, confined to the Darth Vader suit, and learned of Padmé’s death. This loss shattered his ambition to overthrow Palpatine; with Padmé gone, he had no motivation to fight. He wouldn’t actively seek to challenge Palpatine again until he began protecting Luke and ultimately turned against his master.
