Sharon Stone had an instinct her previous marriage had run its course.
The actress, known for her role in Basic Instinct, shared that she divorced her husband due to his response when she had a double mastectomy in the early 2000s to treat a breast tumor.
In a recent podcast interview with David Begnaud, Stone shared that one of her tumors was as large as her entire left breast. She recalled the doctor coming to her home and recommending a double mastectomy, explaining that tumors growing to that extent are usually confirmed as cancerous during initial assessments.
The 68-year-old woman struggled to accept her breast cancer diagnosis, telling her doctor, “I can’t have cancer.”
She remembered him saying, ‘You can’t make that decision.’ She responded, ‘Actually, I can. I am deciding, and I’ve decided I’m going to have a meeting with both sides, because I’m not taking any chances.’
However, Stone said her then-husband—who she didn’t name—was not expecting her to make that choice.
“My husband said, ‘This is ridiculous,’” she said. “And got up and left the room.”
When Begnaud asked her what her ex-boyfriend found absurd, she said he was angry that she’d had surgery on both sides. He was furious about it.

The host asked, “Not that the cancer—if it was true—might kill you?”
“No, no,” Stone replied, with Begnaud noting her ex was more “mad about the breasts being removed.”
Stone recounted that her doctor told her husband, “If more patients were like her, we’d see more women surviving. You need to let her make her own choices.” Stone then firmly asserted her own agency, stating, “I’m the one who makes the decisions, not you.”
“That was when the marriage ended,” the Academy Award-nominated actor explained. “It was clear in that moment—he was finished with me, and it was simply over. You could feel it in the room.”

She explained that he considered her actions silly and unnecessary, believing she was taking on too much responsibility.
Thankfully, Stone’s tumors turned out to be benign.
The actress, known for her role in Casino, recently discussed her family life in an interview, though she didn’t mention any names. She was married to Phil Bronstein from 1998 to 2004, and they adopted a son, Roan, now 26, in 2000. Before that, she was married to television executive Michael Greenburg from 1984 to 1990. She later adopted two more sons, Laird, 21, and Quinn, 20.
