A star rating of 3 out of 5.
Brett Goldstein, known for his role in ‘Shrinking,’ loves romantic comedies, especially those featuring Jennifer Lopez. When he and his writing partner, Joe Kelly, decided to write a classic romcom with a modern, edgier sense of humor, they immediately pictured Jennifer Lopez as the star.
Luckily, Lopez is a big fan of Ted Lasso, especially Roy Kent, who she finds both intimidating and endearing. When she shared this with the show’s creators, they sent her their script, and it was a perfect fit!
Behind the scenes, the chemistry worked well. But on screen, the movie’s leads didn’t quite connect. The contrast between Jennifer Lopez’s wealthy American character and Callum Scott Howells’ clumsy British lawyer was striking—they felt like they belonged in completely different movies. As one character observes, it’s like pairing a glamorous icon with a lovable goofball.

The show centers around Jackie Cruz, the ambitious CEO of an airline facing a lawsuit from a competitor. Her lawyer, Daniel Blanchflower, is defending her, and the case hinges on Jackie convincing the court she maintains a strict separation between her personal and professional life – and that she’s very selective about her romantic relationships, as Daniel charmingly puts it.
Naturally, when they begin to fall for each other, they have to keep it a secret. This leads to stolen moments – maybe romantic dances in a beachside shack in the Dominican Republic, or a quick, passionate encounter in the office elevator. Such is love!
However, Jackie and Daniel also face other challenges. Jackie’s authority as CEO is weakening due to disagreements with her board, and her father, Captain Jack, continues to treat her like a child. We also learn that Daniel is in the country because his sister, Lizzy, is in prison for murder – and Jodie Whittaker plays the role with a wonderfully over-the-top energy, even while in handcuffs.

I’ve been totally hooked on this show! There’s this guy who keeps visiting Jackie while she’s in jail, and honestly, it’s making me suspicious – what’s his angle? They’re trying to keep something quiet, and it’s clear they’re having an affair. But Jackie’s deputy, Sydney – she’s amazing and also pregnant – is onto them and determined to protect her boss, no matter what. And it’s hilarious because the HR guy, Tony Hale, is completely stressed out trying to manage everything. It’s a brilliant mess!
Jennifer Lopez is as charming as ever, and Josh Duhamel is a genuinely likable romantic lead. While this movie likely won’t become a beloved classic, it’s hard not to enjoy it when everyone involved seems to be having such a good time.
