It’s truly heartwarming when we gather to recognize the best in each other. The small acts of kindness, willingness to help, and positive attitudes that often go unseen are what really matter and make a difference.
That’s why BBC Local Radio’s first Make a Difference Day, happening on Friday, June 5th during National Volunteers’ Week, is so meaningful. It’s a moment to truly appreciate those who dedicate their time, effort, and kindness to helping others – people who do it simply because they want to make a difference, not for praise.
Each week on the Make a Difference show, I get to hear from incredible people who are quietly making a real impact. They’re the ones helping out their neighbors, leading local initiatives, and spreading positivity – building stronger communities, one connection at a time. They don’t do it for recognition, but their stories really show how much they brighten all our lives.
I’m so inspired by people like Chris, who’s walking the whole 630-mile South Coast Path all by himself to help the National Brain Appeal! It’s amazing. And then there’s Marco – after his son was diagnosed with autism, he started PEAK Parenting to give autistic kids the support they need and help their parents too. Both of them are just incredible.
What started as a small, personal effort has expanded into major events that bring thousands of people together, fostering a sense of community, empathy, and support for families.

Make a Difference Day feels like a natural extension of the BBC Local Make a Difference Awards, which we’ve hosted for years. Those awards are always incredibly inspiring, highlighting people who truly make a positive impact in their local areas.
This highlights the amazing work already being done, much of it behind the scenes and without seeking attention. Today marks a continuation of that dedication, expanding its impact from formal events into communities nationwide.
I love Make a Difference Day! It’s all about really highlighting the amazing things people are already doing in their communities. All the BBC Local Radio stations are getting stuck in too – they’re out and about helping local projects, supporting charities, and just spending time with people who could use a bit of company. It’s fantastic to see!
It’s more than just acknowledging good deeds – it’s about participating and inspiring further kindness. We consistently see that volunteering doesn’t only benefit those receiving help, it also builds stronger communities and connects people.
These connections combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. They give people a reason to feel fulfilled and build stronger communities for everyone.

This isn’t about fixing all your problems. It’s about taking a moment to appreciate the good things already happening and choosing to be a part of that positivity.
It doesn’t take a lot to make a difference. The people we meet who are creating change aren’t extraordinary; they’re just regular individuals who started with a small action, then another, and kept building from there. That’s the key to progress – not a huge leap, but consistent, small steps.
Make a Difference Day is a wonderful event that lets us share uplifting stories, express gratitude, and find motivation. More importantly, it reminds us that everyone has the power to positively impact the world, no matter how small the act.
Even small acts of kindness – like offering your time, checking on a friend, or helping with a local initiative – can make a big difference. It’s easy to underestimate the impact of these gestures, but when you consider them collectively, across communities, they create something truly remarkable, and that’s definitely worth acknowledging.
