HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series is adding a character who wasn’t featured in the movies. Production for the show’s second season will begin this fall in the UK. The series, starring Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, is set to premiere on Christmas Day, and is planned as a reboot of the Wizarding World. The cast and crew will return to set to begin filming the new season soon.
The upcoming Harry Potter TV series aims to be much more faithful to the books than the popular films, with each book getting an entire season to unfold. This will allow for deeper explorations of key characters and more focus on those who didn’t get much screen time in the movies, like Colin Creevey, the enthusiastic Gryffindor photographer who admired Harry. According to Deadline, casting is currently underway for the role of Colin Creevey. This announcement follows the news that Gracie Cochrane will be replaced as Ginny Weasley starting in season two.
Hugh Mitchell previously played Colin Creevey, a wizard born to non-magical parents, in the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, making his return for the TV series logical. While Colin appears often in the books, the original movies starring Daniel Radcliffe only featured him in the second film. There was no official explanation for why he wasn’t included after that. Instead, the movies introduced Nigel Wolpert, played by William Melling, as a similar character who was created specifically for the films.
What Does Colin Creevey’s Casting Mean For HBO’s Harry Potter Remake

Colin Creevey was a dedicated friend to Harry, Ron, and Hermione throughout the Harry Potter books, consistently supporting them as Voldemort’s threat grew. He bravely fought with Dumbledore’s Army against Dolores Umbridge and tragically died during the Battle of Hogwarts, a heartbreaking moment for Harry. Unfortunately, the films largely left Colin out after Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, so this important part of his story hasn’t been shown on screen.
Casting Colin for a second season of the Harry Potter remake isn’t just about timing; it suggests the show intends to give him a significant role throughout its entire run. This likely means his character will be developed over multiple seasons, building towards a powerful and emotional death scene. While it’s sad to think about, investing time in his story will make audiences care about him, and ultimately, emphasize the importance of his sacrifice in the fight against Voldemort.
HBO’s Harry Potter series will premiere on December 25, 2026.
