Marvel’s Wolverine’s Universe Doesn’t Have X-Men as a Group, Spider-Man Might be an Easter Egg

Although Jean Grey appeared in the latest trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, the game won’t feature the X-Men as a team. According to creative director Marcus Smith, the story is centered on Logan, and the developers wanted to keep the focus solely on his journey, as he explained in an interview with Eurogamer.

The story centers on the idea that mutants are largely unknown to the world, which leads to significant prejudice. People who fear what they don’t understand will likely discriminate against mutants and even wish they didn’t exist.

The key thing is that the X-Men aren’t part of our game’s universe,” he explained. “We decided to center the story around Wolverine and create a world where mutants aren’t widely known. While some people do know about them, those people are actively trying to harm them.

Even though the X-Men won’t appear as a team in the movie, Marvel’s Wolverine will still include appearances from several heroes who are known associates – or enemies – of Logan. Both Jean Grey and Sabretooth will be featured in the film to some degree.

According to Smith, the game starts with Logan as part of Team X alongside Sabretooth, who was featured in the gameplay trailer. However, the X-Men as a group aren’t initially present. The story will introduce many Marvel characters, including Mystique and Sabretooth, as seen in previous trailers, and Jean Grey, who appears in this latest trailer. Players can anticipate encountering even more characters as they progress through the game.

Smith confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Spider-Man exist in the same shared universe. However, the developers didn’t want to overshadow Wolverine’s story. Therefore, any connection to Spider-Man will be subtle, like an Easter egg, and there won’t be a full story crossover between the two games.

According to director Mike Daily, Jean Grey is meant to enhance Logan’s skills, especially when they fight enemies as a team. Beyond combat, her telepathy can also assist Logan when he needs to move stealthily.

Daly explained that even when not using special abilities, the character is a skilled fighter who can handle enemies on her own. As the game progresses, Logan and Jean will frequently work together, especially in stealth situations. Players can use Jean’s telepathy to manipulate enemies and gain an advantage when coordinating with Logan.

Sabretooth and Logan have a complicated, often strained relationship, as described by Daly. This tension is reflected in the playful but competitive dialogue they share during gameplay.

He described their interactions as playful and competitive. For example, Jean might use her powers to create an opening for you to defeat an enemy. But when fighting someone like Sabretooth, it’s different – he might seem like you’ve won, only for him to steal the victory just to frustrate you. It’s a completely different kind of interaction.

The new game, Marvel’s Wolverine, is coming to PlayStation 5 on September 15th. It will offer a variety of accessibility options and will be paced like a comic book.
