One of the key elements that made the Marvel Cinematic Universe successful is now gone. Almost twenty years after Kevin Feige first envisioned a connected universe with the movie Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr., the MCU is still adapting comic book stories for the big screen. However, the recent Multiverse Saga hasn’t gone as smoothly as planned, facing several challenges that led to frequent changes in direction. This period has been much more difficult compared to the earlier Infinity Saga, which, while not perfect, was generally more straightforward.
Fans are getting even more excited about the next Avengers movie, Avengers: Doomsday, now that directors Joe and Anthony Russo are back to lead it. Chris Evans will return as Steve Rogers, and Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom. While details about the story are still secret, Disney and Marvel are starting to reveal more as they promote the film. They’ve confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday will kick off a new era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe – called Phase Zero – meaning it won’t rely on previous storylines.
It’s smart that Avengers: Doomsday isn’t building on past storylines. The Multiverse Saga hasn’t felt very connected, so a big finale wouldn’t really work. Instead, the filmmakers are focusing on the newer heroes introduced recently, while also bringing back familiar faces. Even more notably, they’ve indicated that the MCU will no longer be divided into ‘Phases’ for storytelling purposes.
Phases Used To Be Clear Storytelling Markers For The MCU

The first 11 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, known as the Infinity Saga, was divided into three distinct phases. Phase 1 began with Iron Man and culminated in The Avengers. Phase 2 started with Iron Man 3 and finished with Ant-Man, while Phase 3 opened with Captain America: Civil War and concluded with Spider-Man: Far From Home. This format is continuing with the current Multiverse Saga, which includes Phases 4 through 6. However, unlike the Infinity Saga’s clear beginnings and endings, the lines between stories have become a bit blurred. Many believe this is partly due to the lack of a strong, consistent storyline throughout the last five years of the MCU.
The first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were clearly defined. The Avengers proved that a connected, big-screen franchise was a viable idea. Ant-Man provided a refreshing break after Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Spider-Man: Far From Home served as a conclusion to the Infinity Saga. These films effectively bookended each phase, helping audiences keep track of important plot points that would later become crucial in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
What Phase Zero’s Beginning Means For The MCU’s Future

In 2025, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed they were already planning the next three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the Multiverse Saga which is set to conclude in 2027. Even then, rumors were circulating about potential films like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars potentially rebooting parts of the franchise. Considering this, ‘Phase Zero’ makes sense as a way to signal the start of a fresh direction for the MCU.
However, this approach creates a challenge for marketing. Marvel has a large and dedicated fanbase deeply familiar with its stories and established rules. But it also attracts many casual viewers. The Infinity Saga was so popular that even people who weren’t regular fans went to see the movies. Changing the core rules of the MCU could confuse these viewers and discourage them from continuing to follow the franchise, which could threaten its future. Marvel really needs to regain public interest after losing some viewers in recent years, and confusing casual fans would make that harder.
It’s interesting to consider whether Marvel Studios is developing a new system for organizing its movies and shows, potentially moving away from the current Phase structure. If so, this could mean a broader shift in how the franchise is presented, as they wouldn’t be bound by the previous pattern of three Phases making up a single Saga.
Avengers: Doomsday hits cinemas on December 18, 2026.
