Throughout his impressive career, Denzel Washington has worked successfully with acclaimed directors like Spike Lee and Ridley Scott. He’s collaborated most often with Antoine Fuqua, notably on the film Training Day (where Washington won an Oscar) and the Equalizer movies – his first ever film series. They were planning to team up again for a new Netflix film about the Carthaginian general Hannibal, with filming scheduled for later this year. However, the project has encountered some difficulties, and it’s currently uncertain if it will move forward.
The upcoming Hannibal movie starring Washington has temporarily stopped production due to budget concerns, according to Deadline. Filmmakers and the studio are working together to resolve these issues, and both sides have agreed to pause the project. It’s currently unclear when they will begin pre-production again.
Will Denzel Washington’s Hannibal Movie Still Happen?

Making a movie about Hannibal is going to be a costly undertaking. Hannibal was a famous general who fought against Rome in the Punic Wars, meaning the film will be a large-scale historical epic with likely many elaborate battle scenes and detailed costumes and sets. All of this naturally adds up to a significant budget. While Deadline doesn’t have specific numbers, the fact that Netflix is hesitating shows a shift in the streaming landscape. Unlike the early days of the streaming wars when Netflix was willing to spend freely, streamers are now being much more careful with their money. For example, Tony Gilroy, the creator of Andor, had to convince Disney to approve the show’s budget.
While it’s definitely not great that filming has been paused, the situation isn’t all bad. The project being temporarily put on hold is much better than it being canceled completely, which suggests Netflix still plans to move forward with the film. It also seems like the filmmakers and the studio are working together to resolve the issues. There will be hurdles – director Antoine Fuqua will need to adjust his original vision for Hannibal – but everyone involved still seems committed to making the film a reality.
As a huge fan, I totally get why Netflix is putting so much effort into getting the Hannibal series right. Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua have worked together brilliantly before, and Fuqua just had a massive hit with the Michael movie. While his films haven’t always been critical darlings, the idea behind Hannibal feels like it could really put Netflix in awards contention. They’ve been getting Best Picture nominations for years, and a big historical epic starring Denzel? That just sounds like an awards magnet!
It will be fascinating to see how Netflix handles a potential revival of Hannibal. Netflix is willing to invest heavily in films they believe in, as evidenced by the reportedly massive budget for Greta Gerwig’s Chronicles of Narnia reboot. They’ve also become more flexible with how movies are released, giving The Adventures of Cliff Booth an IMAX premiere and Narnia a theatrical run before streaming. This opens up possibilities for Hannibal to generate revenue both in theaters and through subscriptions. Hopefully, everyone involved can manage the budget and make the project happen.
