Weekly Shonen Jump has become the best-selling manga magazine ever, thanks to long-running hits like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. Since launching in 1968, it’s published countless popular manga series and short stories. Even though tastes have changed, the magazine remains successful today. However, manga series now tend to end much faster – often after only around 300 chapters, or even get cancelled sooner. Recent hits like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen both finished within five to six years, without reaching 300 chapters. To make room for new series each year, Shueisha – the magazine’s publisher – usually gives a manga about a year to release 40-60 chapters and a few collected volumes to gauge its popularity. Unfortunately, even promising series can be cancelled after just 20 chapters if they don’t attract enough readers. Gonron Egg is one example, set to end on March 29, 2026, after only 21 chapters. Currently, a new Shonen Jump series that started earlier this year is struggling to gain traction and may face cancellation.
