3 Surprising Games That Skipped Summer Game Fest & What It Could Mean for Fans

Early June 2026 was a huge week for video game fans! We saw major announcements from PlayStation’s State of Play and Summer Game Fest, and it all wrapped up with the Xbox Showcase on June 7th. Summer Game Fest was the biggest event, featuring the first looks at many highly anticipated titles, including the final chapter in the Final Fantasy 7 remake series. However, several games that people were expecting to see weren’t revealed.

Before Summer Game Fest, I shared my guesses about what announcements to expect. While I wasn’t entirely sure we’d see everything – especially a game like Elder Scrolls 6 – I thought some titles were almost guaranteed to appear. However, several games that many gamers, including myself, expected to be showcased were notably absent. This was unexpected, and it might worry fans who are eager to learn more about these games and when they’ll be released. Here are the three most surprising omissions from Summer Game Fest, and what their absence might suggest.

3) Hogwarts Legacy 2 

It wasn’t a sure thing we’d see Hogwarts Legacy 2 revealed, but with the new Harry Potter TV series coming soon and lots of talk about a sequel, I thought we might get an announcement at Summer Game Fest. Even if the game isn’t launching at the same time as the show, it would make sense to build excitement by officially announcing it now, as fans prepare to experience the Wizarding World again.

Just because the game wasn’t shown at Summer Game Fest doesn’t automatically mean it’s delayed. A 2027 release is still a possibility, as many rumors suggest. There are plenty of ways to announce a game like Hogwarts Legacy 2, and September 1st – Back to Hogwarts day – could be a good time, especially with the new TV series coming out around then. So, while it’s a bit surprising it wasn’t at SGF, fans probably don’t need to worry about the game’s future just yet.

2) Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra

It’s been a rough road for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. The game, which many fans were eagerly awaiting, has faced several delays, casting doubt on its release. Despite assurances from Paramount Game Studios just before Summer Game Fest that the game was still being made, we didn’t get a single glimpse of Captain America and Black Panther’s new adventure.

It’s a little surprising we haven’t heard much about the game recently, but it’s not overly worrying. The previous delay didn’t come with a new release date, so a launch this year was already doubtful. Statements from Paramount Game Studios leaders indicate we likely won’t see Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra until 2027 or later. The fact that the game is reportedly playable makes it even more unexpected that we didn’t see anything new at Summer Game Fest. It seems Paramount isn’t quite ready to share the game with the public, and it could be a while before they do.

1) Dungeons & Dragons: Warlock

I really hope I’m wrong about this, but things aren’t looking good for the new Warlock game. Wizards of the Coast initially said we’d get another update in summer 2026 when they first showed it at The Game Awards last year. Because Geoff Keighley was involved, I thought we’d definitely see gameplay footage at Summer Game Fest. However, Wizards cancelled the single-player Dungeons & Dragons RPG being developed by Giant Skull, which made me worry about the project. And then, it wasn’t shown at Summer Game Fest at all.

It’s true that Wizards of the Coast never officially announced Warlock would be at Summer Game Fest, and they still have time to reveal more information later. However, I’m a little worried about the game’s future now that it wasn’t shown. Hopefully, we’ll get an update soon to reassure me and other Dungeons & Dragons fans who are excited about this new video game based on the tabletop RPG.
