Star Wars: 5 Things That Still Make No Sense About Yoda, Grogu & Their Species

Since he first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda has been a beloved part of the Star Wars universe. He originally seemed completely unique, with his wisdom, powerful connection to the Force, and unusual speech patterns. While the prequel trilogy expanded the Star Wars story, it only briefly suggested that Yoda wasn’t the only one of his kind. Yaddle, a fellow Jedi Master, shared his species, but she wasn’t a major character.

Since their first appearances, Yoda and Yaddle have both had more screen time – Yoda much more so, especially in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi. However, in recent years, it’s Grogu, the lovable baby, who has really captured the hearts of Star Wars fans and brought renewed attention to this species. Despite this, many mysteries still surround Yoda, Grogu, Yaddle, and their kind – here are five of the biggest unanswered questions.

Grogu Is Now Getting Treated Like A Dog

A recent point of discussion among fans of The Mandalorian is Din Djarin’s changed behavior towards Grogu in the new movie. While their relationship didn’t show this before, Din starts treating Grogu like a pet, using commands like “heel” and “stay” – terms typically reserved for dogs, not children. This has led many to wonder why Din’s approach to Grogu suddenly shifted.

The attempt at humor fell flat and felt strange, ultimately not making much sense. Din has consistently acted like Grogu is a real child, so this abrupt and unsettling shift in behavior was unexpected. It remains to be seen if this will be a recurring theme in future seasons of The Mandalorian, or the planned movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, though neither project has been officially confirmed yet.

Yoda Never Followed Up After Sensing Anakin’s Pain

A puzzling part of Yoda’s story in Star Wars is that he didn’t investigate after sensing strong negative emotions – anger, fear, and pain – coming from Anakin Skywalker in Attack of the Clones. While Yoda didn’t realize Anakin had just killed the Tusken Raiders, including women and children, he did sense something was terribly wrong and didn’t follow up on it. Had he known the details, he surely would have acted.

The Clone Wars started soon after Yoda sensed these troubling feelings, which understandably occupied his attention. However, these emotions were significant enough that he should have addressed them with Anakin again relatively quickly. Considering the source – Anakin Skywalker – Yoda really ought to have investigated further.

Every Member Of This Species Has Been Force Sensitive

So far in Star Wars, we’ve only seen three members of this species: Yoda, Yaddle, and Grogu. What’s remarkable is that all of them have a connection to the Force. While this doesn’t automatically mean the entire species is naturally Force-sensitive, it certainly suggests that might be the case.

Although not entirely surprising for a Star Wars story, this development goes against how the franchise usually portrays the Force – as a power available to any species. This has been particularly consistent under Disney’s guidance, though even George Lucas had established rules about who could use the Force, like his idea that Wookiees couldn’t become Jedi.

This Species Still Has No Name

What’s really unusual about this creature is that it still doesn’t have a name, which is rare for this series. George Lucas intentionally kept the details of Yoda’s species – including where they come from and their home planet – a secret. It remains to be seen if Disney’s Star Wars will continue to maintain that mystery, particularly now with the arrival of Grogu.

Because Grogu is so popular and likely to remain a key character, Disney might decide to share more details about his species, perhaps even giving it a name. However, doing so could upset many fans, so Disney might choose to honor George Lucas’s original intent and keep the species a mystery.

Why Does Yoda Talk Like That?

Perhaps the most puzzling thing about this species—a mystery ever since Yoda first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back—is his unique way of speaking. It’s not simply that he talks backwards, but Yoda has a very unusual speech pattern that’s never been fully explained.

Star Wars has actually made the mystery surrounding Yoda’s speech even bigger. While Grogu hasn’t spoken yet, another character, Yaddle, does speak, but in a completely different way than Yoda. This makes us wonder if Yoda’s unique way of talking is just specific to him, or if Yaddle is the exception. We might not get a clear answer until Grogu finally speaks – and that could be a long way off, if it ever happens.
