Update #2 [Sun 7th Jun 2026, 3pm]:
The European ratings board, PEGI, has listed Gears of War: E-Day for PlayStation 5, suggesting a release on Sony’s console is likely.
Either Jeff Grubb is incorrect, or this decision was made very recently – possibly within the last few weeks, or even just a few days.
The latest update on whether Gears of War: E-Day will be released on the PlayStation 5 comes from trusted industry insider billbil-kun. Rumors have been circulating, but billbil-kun has now shared information on the topic.
He can’t confirm or deny it, but he’s found evidence that a physical PS5 version of the game is in development. This supports a previous rumor from Jeff Grubb that the game was originally intended for PlayStation, but plans changed recently.
Billbil-kun announced that pre-orders for the game will be available on Xbox and PC right after today’s Xbox Showcase.
A PlayStation 5 version of the game Gears of War: E-Day was reportedly in the works, but Xbox has apparently decided to cancel the project.
Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb shared some news on a recent livestream: the third-person shooter is likely to be the final game shown at today’s Xbox Showcase.
This new game from The Coalition is noteworthy because it’s one of the few Microsoft games coming soon that won’t also be available on PlayStation 5. Microsoft has already announced that titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable will be released on Sony’s PS5.
Here’s what Grubb said:
The planned PlayStation 5 version of ‘Gears of War: E-Day’ has been canceled. This was a recent decision, and it seems to be part of a larger trend where the developers are prioritizing Xbox exclusivity, despite it not making logical sense. The question is whether this strategy is just to boost Xbox sales by another 20 million units.
This information is currently unconfirmed, but it’s worth noting that the source, Grubb, is typically reliable, so there’s a good chance it’s accurate.
Gears of War first came to PlayStation 5 last year with the release of ‘Reloaded,’ which appeared to be an introduction to the series for new players on the platform.
Honestly, if this is right, it makes total sense! Ever since Asha Sharma became the new head at Xbox, she’s been dropping hints about bringing exclusive games back. It’s exciting to think that might actually happen!
This is quite different from what Microsoft has said in the past, including praise from CEO Satya Nadella for the division’s contributions to the PlayStation 5.
We’ll likely find out more about Xbox’s plans later today, but honestly, all the back-and-forth is getting really frustrating.
