Star Wars is famous for its sad and dramatic stories. Even in the first movie, A New Hope, we see several heartbreaking deaths: Luke Skywalker’s aunt and uncle are killed, Obi-Wan Kenobi sacrifices himself, and Princess Leia witnesses the destruction of her home planet. Over the years, the Star Wars universe has continued to feature many more tragic character deaths.
Although not all deaths in Star Wars occur within romantic relationships, the franchise often gives its most notable couples particularly tragic endings. Here are five of those couples whose stories are the most heartbreaking.
5) Satine Kryze & Obi-Wan Kenobi

Though Obi-Wan Kenobi and Satine Kryze were never officially a couple, Star Wars: The Clone Wars revealed that they both had romantic feelings for each other. This became clear to viewers, but their potential relationship ended tragically when Darth Maul killed Satine.
Even though Obi-Wan and Satine couldn’t be together due to his life as a Jedi, it was heartbreaking enough that they loved each other. But watching Satine die at the hands of Maul, and holding her as she passed away, was even more devastating. Because of this intense, unfulfilled connection and tragic end, they easily rank among the five saddest romantic failures in Star Wars.
4) Bix Caleen & Cassian Andor

Bix Caleen and Cassian Andor became a couple fairly late in the Star Wars timeline, with their relationship only appearing in the series Andor. Before Andor, many fans believed Cassian had romantic feelings for Jyn Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The show initially presented Bix as being in a relationship with someone else, but by the second season of Andor, Bix and Cassian were officially together and clearly deeply in love.
From the start, it was heartbreaking to see Cassian’s death confirmed, as established in Rogue One. But what made it even worse was Bix leaving him, wanting him to fully commit to the Rebellion and the fight against the Empire. The season 2 finale of Andor added another layer of tragedy, revealing she was pregnant with Cassian’s child, a child who would grow up without ever knowing their father.
3) Leia Organa & Han Solo

For decades, Princess Leia and Han Solo have been one of Star Wars’ most beloved couples, and their status as heroes from the original movies makes it unlikely anyone will replace them in fans’ hearts. However, their story ended tragically and sparked a lot of debate. After being apart for years, Leia and Han shared one last conversation before Han was killed by their son, Kylo Ren.
As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I have to say the ending for Han and Leia was genuinely heartbreaking. After decades of watching their relationship unfold, starting way back in the eighties, seeing Leia pass away in The Rise of Skywalker felt like a real gut punch. It was especially sad considering how long it took them to finally get together. And the tragedy is complete – because Han wasn’t connected to the Force, there’s no hope of a reunion, even as Force ghosts. It’s a truly devastating conclusion for a couple we all loved.
2) Hera Syndulla & Kanan Jarrus

Though they only appeared in the animated series Star Wars Rebels, Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla are considered one of the best couples in the entire Star Wars franchise. Kanan, even as a Jedi who isn’t supposed to have romantic attachments, deeply loved Hera, and that love actually helped him resist the pull of the dark side.
He truly loved Hera, sacrificing himself for her and the rest of the Ghost crew. Despite being blinded by Darth Maul earlier in the series, the Force granted him one final vision of her before he died. Similar to Bix, Hera is now raising a child on her own – Jacen Syndulla – as Kanan, like Cassian, never had the chance to meet his son.
1) Padmé Amidala & Anakin Skywalker

Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker are arguably the most heartbreaking couple in the entire Star Wars saga. While Anakin bears the main responsibility for the tragedy that befell Padmé, their intense love and youthful impulsiveness also played a significant role in their devastating fates – with Anakin’s downfall into darkness being a key part of that tragedy.
It’s especially heartbreaking that Anakin and Padmé never had the chance to raise their children together, which makes their story one of the most tragic in all of Star Wars.
