The 2000s were a pivotal decade for fantasy films, dramatically changing the movie industry. The huge success of both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring ushered in a new era where fantasy stories dominated. Studios realized the importance of adapting popular books, especially those aimed at young adults, to capture a large and enthusiastic audience.

The success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe sparked a wave of similar franchises. Some, like Percy Jackson and The Hunger Games, found success, while others, such as The Golden Compass, Eragon, and Inkheart, didn’t fare as well. Most of these franchises followed the pattern of Harry Potter, focusing on younger heroes and magical worlds, rather than the epic scope of Lord of the Rings. We’ve seen many of these series rise, fall, and even get rebooted, and that trend is still happening today.

5) Harry Potter

It seems Harry Potter is returning to screens, bringing things full circle and proving that popular stories often get revisited. After launching the current wave of fantasy and young adult entertainment 25 years ago, the series is getting a TV remake on HBO. Starting with The Philosopher’s Stone this Christmas, the plan is to dedicate each book to a single season over the next ten years. This approach will allow for a more detailed and faithful adaptation of the books, while also leaving room to explore the story beyond the original text.

Remaking these films is a challenge, as the originals are still incredibly popular after just 15 years. They continue to do well on streaming services, heavily influence theme parks and attractions, and remain a significant commercial success. The new adaptation will need to carefully balance honoring the original stories with creating something fresh. The main young roles will be played by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Joining them is a strong adult cast including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

Although the Narnia books came out forty years before Harry Potter, Disney’s Narnia movies were definitely inspired by the success of the Wizarding World – and the film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. The first movie, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), did very well, earning $745 million worldwide with a $180 million budget. However, that film was the most popular of the Narnia series, and the later movies weren’t quite as successful.

Following the success of Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the Chronicles of Narnia film series stalled and remained inactive for years, despite ongoing discussions about a revival. That revival is now happening at Netflix, spearheaded by Greta Gerwig, fresh off the huge success of Barbie. However, this new series won’t begin with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Instead, it’s starting with The Magician’s Nephew – the first book in the Narnia timeline, though originally the sixth published. This story acts as a prequel, showing how Narnia was created by Aslan.

The upcoming film, The Magician’s Nephew, features a stellar cast: Emma Mackey will play Jadis, the White Witch, and Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep are expected to voice Aslan. The movie is generating a lot of excitement, and it will have a special theatrical release in cinemas on February 12, 2027, before becoming available to stream on Netflix starting April 2. Greta Gerwig is also committed to directing another film based on the Chronicles of Narnia, suggesting this could be the start of a complete movie series adapting all of C.S. Lewis’ books.

3) Eragon

I absolutely loved Eragorn when I first read it – it’s the book that started Christopher Paolini’s amazing Inheritance Cycle. It’s about this ordinary farm boy who discovers a dragon egg, and suddenly his whole life changes. It felt like a perfect story for a movie back in the 2000s, but honestly, the film adaptation was a huge disappointment. They changed so much from the book, critics hated it – it only got a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes! – and even though it made $250 million, it cost $100 million to make, which basically killed any chance of us getting more movies. It’s a shame, because the books are fantastic.

Starting in 2021, Christopher Paolini and his fans campaigned on social media for a new adaptation of Eragon, hoping Disney—which acquired the rights through its purchase of 20th Century Fox—would take it on. They used the hashtag #EragonRemake to spread the word. In 2022, reports confirmed that a remake was happening as a series on Disney+, with Paolini involved as a writer.

For a long time, there wasn’t much news about an Eragon adaptation. However, it was recently announced that Todd Harthan and Todd Helbing (known for Superman & Lois) are co-creating a series with the book’s author. Following the successful Percy Jackson show on Disney+, which also involved its author and rescued a previously failed movie franchise, fans are optimistic that Eragon will finally get the adaptation it deserves.

2) Twilight

Following the success of Harry Potter, the Twilight book series became a hugely popular movie franchise. The first film, starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, was a massive financial success, earning $407 million with a budget of only $37 million. The final movie, Breaking Dawn – Part 2, even surpassed that, bringing in $829 million. Twilight’s fanbase was incredibly enthusiastic and passionate, making it a cultural phenomenon from the late 2000s through the early 2010s. A new adaptation will now reveal whether that level of interest remains today.

This isn’t a complete restart or remake of Twilight. Instead, the new project will be an adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s Midnight Sun, which revisits the same story but told from Edward Cullen’s perspective. Unlike the original films, this version will be an animated TV series. Meyer has also hinted at writing additional Twilight books, meaning this might not be the only new adaptation we see in the future.

1) Pirates Of The Caribbean

Disney has been debating the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise for years. Will the next film continue the original story, start fresh with a reboot, or try something new? It’s a crucial decision, as Pirates is one of Disney’s biggest properties (excluding Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and other studios). It’s been a while since the last movie, Dead Men Tell No Tales (released in 2017), and the situation is complicated by controversies surrounding Johnny Depp. Although Margot Robbie was once planned to star in a new Pirates film, its status is currently unclear.

Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are actively working to revive the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Earlier this year, reports indicated a new film was a high priority, potentially involving Margot Robbie and possibly focusing on Jack Sparrow’s son. While Bruckheimer has confirmed talks with Robbie, he dismissed the idea of a film centered around Sparrow’s son. He does hope Johnny Depp will reprise his role, which is a key point of discussion at the studio. Ultimately, whether Depp returns or not, another Pirates movie will eventually happen.
