Okay, so huge news for Metroid fans like me! It looks like Metroid Prime 5 is actually happening for the Switch 2! You know, the original Metroid Prime is a legendary game, and Prime 2 and 3 were amazing too. But honestly, the series has never been a massive seller, which was kinda disappointing. We saw that again last year with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Everyone was hyped after waiting forever, but it didn’t sell as well as Nintendo hoped, and it actually got mixed reviews – a 79 on Metacritic, which is the first time a Prime game hasn’t been a critical hit. That made a lot of people think the series was finished, or at least going on hold again. But apparently, that’s not the case! It sounds like Nintendo is still committed to Samus and the Prime universe, which is awesome to hear.
According to Nintendo insider Nash Weedle on X (formerly Twitter), development of Metroid Prime 5 is underway, even though many didn’t expect it. Weedle claims work on the new game started during the development of Metroid Prime 4, hinting that Nintendo may have been overly optimistic about MP4‘s progress. Retro Studios, the team behind the Metroid Prime series, is developing the game.
Metroid Prime 5 So Soon?
It’s surprising to see a new Metroid Prime game arrive so soon, especially considering it took 19 years to release Metroid Prime 4 – and that game followed three very successful installments. Nintendo likely expected Metroid Prime 4 to be a critical and commercial hit, potentially revolutionizing the series, which would have justified a quick follow-up with Metroid Prime 5. However, Metroid Prime 4 didn’t achieve either of those goals.
Okay, so I just heard about this new leak, and while I trust the source – Nash Weedle has been right before – I’m taking it with a grain of salt. Things change fast in game development, you know? This is what’s planned right now, but there’s always a chance the project gets cancelled, totally reworked, or something else happens that makes the leak inaccurate. Basically, don’t get too hyped until we get official confirmation!
Nintendo hasn’t officially responded to this recent leak, and it’s unlikely they will. However, if they do make a statement, we’ll be sure to update this article.
