Alexis Bledel is back on the big screen.
Lauren Graham, known for her role in Gilmore Girls, recently stepped onto the red carpet at the Tribeca Film Festival. She was there to promote Ponderosa, her first film in four years.
Alexis Bledel looked radiant at the film premiere, wearing a sophisticated knee-length satin dress. The dress featured a pale yellow upper portion with a delicate sheer neckline and a contrasting black skirt. She completed her outfit with black heels, a shimmering clutch, and wore her hair down.
The 44-year-old actor also took photos with director Rob Rice and fellow actor Jack Dylan Grazer in the festival’s official photo booth.
The film Ponderosa centers around Zeke, a man who appreciates the calm routine of suburban life with his mother, Sandra (Alexis Bledel). Everything changes when Sandra loses her job at a buffet, and a wealthy customer named George (Bill Camp) unexpectedly enters their world, according to the Tribeca Film Festival.
This project comes after Alexis Bledel’s work on The Handmaid’s Tale, where she appeared throughout its four seasons and returned for the show’s final episode in season six. She was most recently seen in public last year at the 2025 Emmy Awards, where she joined former Gilmore Girls co-star Lauren Graham to present the award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series to The Studio.
As Graham explained next to Alexis Bledel, Gilmore Girls first aired 25 years ago and quickly became synonymous with autumn.

As a huge fan, I always felt like Gilmore Girls was a big deal, but Alexis Bledel pointed out that, surprisingly, it was actually a pretty small show, budget-wise. Lauren Graham immediately joked that meant they were always broke, which, honestly, felt pretty accurate even while we were watching!
The comedian recalled that when The Drew Carey Show had birthday celebrations nearby, they often shared the remaining cake with them. He also jokingly noted that the Burbank, California landscape sometimes reminded them of their home state of Connecticut, and they’d playfully point it out while walking around.
Bledel pointed out that even though Gilmore Girls was popular in the fall, it was actually a relatively small production, prompting Lauren to playfully add that they didn’t have a big budget.
“If there was a birthday at The Drew Carey Show next door, they would send us their leftover sheet cake,” the 59-year-old shared at the time. “We walked in circles in Burbank, saying, ‘Hey, look how Connecticut it is here today.'”

Following Alexis Bledel’s playful comment that the cast was “bullied and starving” throughout the show’s seven seasons, Graham pointed out that they at least had good scripts to work with.
Alexis Bledel isn’t alone in stepping back from public life. Here are other celebrities who have chosen to leave Hollywood…

Following a serious heart attack in 2019, the actor best known for The Mask of Zorro returned to his hometown of Málaga, Spain, to dedicate himself to performing in the theater.
You know, after a really serious health scare, I had a huge realization. I was speaking with The Times recently, and I shared that facing my own mortality actually brought a lot of clarity. It made me step back and truly see myself – not as anything grand, but simply as an actor. It sounds simple, but it completely shifted my perspective on everything.
The Tony Award nominee, who still acts in TV and movies sometimes, now owns a theater and actively participates in local events.
He went on to say he’d never felt happier. Staying connected to his community—his home, his neighbors, and the people he grew up with—meant everything to him. He hadn’t lost that feeling over time; in fact, it had only grown stronger.

After 19 seasons, The Ellen DeGeneres Show concluded in 2022 following accusations of a negative and harmful workplace. These claims led to an internal investigation, the dismissal of several executives, and widespread public criticism.
Ellen made a comeback with her last standup comedy show, For Your Approval, which premiered on Netflix in September 2024. Before the show aired, she announced her plans to retire from Hollywood.
During her Ellen’s Last Stand…Up tour, the comedian told the audience, according to SFGate, that she’s retiring after her upcoming Netflix special. She stated, “This is the last time you’re going to see me.”
Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have settled in the Cotswolds. Ellen explained to Richard Bacon in July 2025, during a conversation at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, that they decided to remain there after Donald Trump won reelection in November 2024.
She enthusiastically described the English countryside as “absolutely beautiful,” telling the BBC that its charm was unlike anything she’d seen before. She particularly appreciated the picturesque villages, towns, and architecture, noting it represented a more relaxed and uncomplicated way of life.
“It’s just a nicer place,” Ellen explained. “The animals are well cared for, and everyone is friendly. We really love living here. We moved in November, which wasn’t the best timing, but I finally got to experience snow! Portia brought her horses with her, I have chickens, and we even had sheep for a couple of weeks.”

I’ve been following Tyra Banks for years, and I was so curious why she suddenly moved to Australia! Turns out, it’s all about her ice cream! She has this amazing company called SMiZE and Dream, and while it started by supplying things like airplanes and cruises, she realized Australia was a huge part of the production. She was going back and forth a lot to oversee things at their big facility there, and she just completely fell in love with the country. She even shared on Today with Jenna & Friends that Australia is a key market for ice cream – right up there with America and New Zealand! It makes so much sense now. She’s built a life there with her son, York, her ex Erik Asla, and her boyfriend Louis Bélanger-Martin, and she says it’s been a dream come true for her and her family. It’s wonderful to see her so happy and successful with both her personal life and her business!

Eva Longoria, known for her role on Desperate Housewives, has moved from Los Angeles and now splits her time between Mexico and Spain with her husband, José Bastón, and their son, Santiago. She explained to Marie Claire that while she spent her adult life in Los Angeles, the city had changed, and the pandemic accelerated her decision to leave. Issues like homelessness and taxes also contributed, though she doesn’t want to criticize California.
Longoria clarified to The View: Behind the Table that her move wasn’t politically motivated by President Trump’s election. Instead, it stemmed from work opportunities – six months filming in Catalonia, followed by four months in Mexico, and then returning to Spain. She’s been living abroad for years now and dislikes the idea of her decision being framed as political. She continues to work on projects like Only Murders in the Building and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip. Longoria also expressed her privilege in being able to leave the US, noting her anxiety and sadness for those who aren’t so fortunate.

Actor Richard Gere has relocated from Chicago to Spain with his family. He shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in November 2024 that his wife, Alejandra Silva, who is from Galicia, encouraged the move, and they plan to live in Madrid for several years. Gere is enthusiastic about what this change will mean for their young sons, Alexander and James, noting that the boys are already bilingual and will thrive in the new environment. He also has an adult son, Homer, with his former partner, Carey Lowell. In a January 2025 interview with Elle España, Gere stated the family is happier than ever and is currently enjoying a positive chapter in their lives.

Singer Christina Milian and her family have officially made Paris their home. Married to French singer Matt Pokora for over seven years, the couple previously spent six months of each year commuting between the U.S. and France. They decided to fully relocate so their children – Violet (from a previous marriage), and sons Isaiah and Kenna – could attend school in France. Milian shared that it was a fantastic opportunity she couldn’t pass up. The family seems to be thriving in their new life. Milian told TopMob that her kids are happy and fluent in French, and she enjoys an active lifestyle balanced with her work, which she does during hours that accommodate the time difference. She describes it as a healthy and fulfilling arrangement.

Lindsay Lohan is frustrated by ongoing speculation about why she left Los Angeles and decided to clarify the situation, reflecting on her busy career and social life during the 2000s. In a March 2024 interview with Bustle, the Parent Trap star explained that she felt her work was often overshadowed by constant paparazzi attention, which she found irritating. She wished the focus could have remained on her career, but the media frenzy took on a life of its own, prompting her desire to step away. This led to her moving overseas, first to London and then Dubai, and even opening beach clubs in Greece, but also a need to escape the constant spotlight and let her work speak for itself.
Lindsay Lohan admitted she worried she might never find love, questioning if it would ever happen for her. She realized that taking time to focus on herself was key to opening up new possibilities and allowing her to say ‘yes’ to the things she truly wanted.
Eventually, she did find love with Bader Shammas, marrying in 2022 and welcoming their son, Luai, in 2023.
Though they currently live in Dubai, Lindsay hasn’t left acting behind. She continues to appear in films like Our Little Secret, Irish Wish, and Freakier Friday.

Josh decided to leave Hollywood after some careful thought. He explained to People magazine in July 2024 that Hollywood isn’t just a location, but a way of life. Being constantly surrounded by people focused solely on the film industry, he felt, would limit his perspective. He wanted a more varied life.
“I’ve always wanted to be around people doing lots of other things, things that would take my mind off work and help me grow,” Josh said. “That’s what makes life interesting.”
So, Josh, along with his wife, Tamsin Egerton, and their four children, moved to the countryside in Hampshire, England. He told The Guardian in July 2024 that time flies with a large family, and while it might seem like less is happening, it actually allows for more of what truly matters. Despite the move, Josh has remained active in his career, appearing in films like Verity, Fight or Flight, and Trap.

If you don’t follow Jesse on social media, you might be surprised to learn he no longer lives in Los Angeles. He revealed in a February 2025 interview with CBS News Sunday Morning that he’s lived in Indiana for the past ten years, finding it a more comfortable and stable environment. Despite being an Oscar nominee, Jesse leads a fairly ordinary life with his wife, Anna Strout, and son, Banner. He avoids social media and doesn’t spend much time networking within the industry. With a teacher for a wife and a son who isn’t a big movie fan, Jesse feels removed from the pressures of constantly evaluating his place in Hollywood.

I’ve been a fan of Eliza Dushku ever since she was on shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and in the movie Bring It On. I was so impressed to learn back in September 2024 that she’s now a certified psychedelic-assisted therapist and is continuing her education to become a fully qualified mental health professional. It’s amazing to see her dedicating herself to such important work!
She explained to Boston Magazine that she was able to change her life’s path to prioritize her own well-being, with the goal of then helping others heal. She felt it was important to share her personal journey and the sense of peace and purpose she’d found, believing this was truly her calling.

The actress best known for playing in The Flintstones shared that she relocated to Ireland in January 2025 with her son, Clay. She’s currently working on becoming an Irish citizen because her grandparents were from Ireland. While she mentioned recent political events as a factor in her decision to move, she hasn’t ruled out the possibility of returning to her home country in the future.
In a TikTok video, she shared that she misses her children, friends, and her life back home. She’s working on building a new life in this country, and she said they’ll think about returning to America when it’s safe and everyone there has equal rights.

Actress Evangeline Lilly, known for her role in Ant-Man and the Wasp, has said she’s stepping away from acting for an unspecified amount of time after two decades in the business.
In a June 2024 Instagram post, Evangeline shared how happy and at peace she feels while pursuing her goals. She expressed gratitude for her life and explained that while choosing a path less traveled – prioritizing purpose over things like money and fame – can be daunting, it ultimately brings a deep sense of satisfaction.
However, she’s not ruling out a return to Hollywood completely, explaining, “I could see myself going back someday, but right now, I’m happy where I am.”

Since starring in the 2019 Netflix series V-Wars, the actor best known for The Vampire Diaries hasn’t taken on another acting role. He’s been focusing on a personal project: working to fight climate change by improving soil health around the world.
Ian Somerhalder took a break from acting over four years ago to focus on his family, grow his businesses, and get his documentaries released. He told TopMob News in November 2023 that he wanted to launch Kiss the Ground (released in 2020) and its sequel, Common Ground, both of which highlight the importance of regenerative farming. He shares two children with his wife, Nikki Reed.
Looking ahead, the actor shared that he envisions himself as a rancher, focused on building lasting brands – like his bourbon and wellness company. He’s deeply committed to sustainable farming and healthy soil practices, which are central to his and his family’s lifestyle. He explained this is his long-term goal and the reason behind his passions, stating, ‘That’s who I am, and that’s what I’m working towards.’

In a February 2021 episode of her podcast, Empty Inside, former iCarly star Jennette McCurdy shared with guest Anna Faris that she had stopped acting a few years prior. She’s now pursuing writing and directing, alongside hosting the podcast.
Jennette recently shared that she regrets many of the acting roles she took earlier in her career, detailing these feelings in her 2022 memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died. She explained that she feels unfulfilled by the parts she played, describing them as cheesy and embarrassing. Having worked on shows from ages 13 to 21, she was already self-conscious about her work by age 15, feeling it wasn’t something her peers admired.
She hasn’t ruled out returning to acting completely. In an October 2022 interview with TopMob News, she explained that writing her book helped her consider acting in a new light, free from past pressures. She thinks she might be open to it again, but only if she were to write a role specifically for herself.

It seemed like a pretty easy decision. The chance to marry Prince Harry, commit to meaningful charitable work, and even wear the Queen’s tiaras would make leaving Hollywood completely worthwhile.
Like Grace Kelly before her, who transitioned from Hollywood to Monaco, Meghan Markle left her life and acting career in Toronto—including her popular role on the show Suits—to join the British Royal Family. Now that she and Prince Harry have stepped down as senior royals and live in California, Meghan is returning to professional life. This includes a production deal with Netflix, where she released the 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan and will launch a lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, in 2025. She has also started a podcast and launched her brand, As Ever.

After starring in over 40 films since she began her career with 1994’s The Mask, the actress really needed a rest when she finished filming Annie in 2014.
She told Gwyneth Paltrow that she realized she wanted a different lifestyle. After years of intense work and filmmaking, she found it exhausting. Making a movie, she explained, completely takes over your life – you’re committed for long hours every day, for months, and have no time for anything else.
Cameron Diaz had many interests she wanted to pursue, including writing – she followed up her successful book, The Body Book, with The Longevity Book – and starting a family with her husband, Benji Madden. While she told InStyle magazine in 2019 that she didn’t miss acting and was focused on wellness, it seems she might be open to returning for at least one more project.
Jamie Foxx explained to TopMob News how they convinced Cameron Diaz to star in the 2025 Netflix movie Back in Action. He said they practically pleaded with her, getting down on their knees to ask her to do it. “We love her and have been waiting for her to return, and this is going to be amazing,” he added.

The actor stated firmly that he wouldn’t return to his role after five seasons on Empire. When asked by Extra about his plans before the show’s sixth and final season in 2019, Terrence Howard said, “I’m finished with acting. I’m done with pretending.”
Despite appearing in a few projects since then, the Academy Award nominee announced his intention to retire from acting again in 2022 while promoting his Peacock series, The Best Man: The Final Chapters. He explained to ET that he felt he’d given his all as an actor and was now happy to see new talent emerge, not wanting to simply rehash his previous work.
Even with those previous concerns, Howard has continued to act, appearing in shows like Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist and the Netflix movie Shirley. He also has several new projects planned.

After his character, King Joffrey, died on the show in 2014, the 21-year-old actor told EW he was leaving acting. He explained that he’d been working since he was eight years old and simply wasn’t enjoying it as much anymore.
Jack, no longer a young star, felt some of the joy had faded. He explained that turning his hobby into a job felt different. “Before, it was just something fun to do with friends, or a summer pastime,” he said. “I still like it, but making a living from something changes how you feel about it. It’s not that I dislike it, it’s just not my career goal.”
After a six-year hiatus, Jack returned to acting in 2020 with a role in the BBC series Out of Her Mind. Since then, he’s also been in films like Rebecca’s Boyfriend and In the Land of Saints and Sinners, and TV shows including Safe Harbor and The Famous Five.

After becoming famous for her role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Jennifer Aniston married actor Kevin Kline in 1989. They decided to stagger their work schedules so one parent could always be home with their children, Owen and Greta. Greta is now a singer known as Frankie Cosmos.
He added that Phoebe consistently prioritizes staying home with her children when it’s her turn to work. While she briefly appeared in her friend Jennifer Jason Leigh’s 2001 independent film, The Anniversary Party, Cates mainly focuses on running her New York City store, Blue Tree.

When he was most famous for movies like Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, the actor took a break from filmmaking after his wife sadly passed away from breast cancer in 1991. He wanted to dedicate his time to raising his children, Rachel and Mitchell.
Despite not appearing in a live-action film since 1997 – he even turned down a small role in the 2016 Ghostbusters remake – Rick remains a beloved figure, as shown by the strong reaction to news of an assault he experienced while walking in New York City in 2020. Fortunately, fans will soon see him return to the screen alongside Josh Gad in the upcoming Disney reboot, Shrunk.

Oh my gosh, when Drew married Adam Kimmel back in 2010, she sort of let it slip she might be retiring from acting! She told Vogue that so many roles require, like, a lot of intimate scenes, and she just wasn’t into that anymore. She said it felt weird, and even though she and Adam had a super solid relationship, she needed a really amazing role to justify going through all that. It had to be worth it, you know? Like, a truly incredible part to make it all okay.
Becoming a mom truly shifted my priorities. After my son Martin joined his big sister Louisanna in 2014, I realized my heart wasn’t in acting anymore. I told Us Weekly a while back that I felt like a complete outsider to that world, and honestly, I was okay with that! I’m happily focused on raising my kids and supporting my husband, Jimmy, with his work. I also enjoy painting when I have a moment. That’s really the main reason I stepped away from movies – my family simply came first.

She’d built a successful career with roles in popular shows like Ally McBeal, Nip/Tuck, Arrested Development, and Scandal. After all that, the Australian actress started to feel like it was time for a change.
Turning 45, I started thinking about trying something completely new and challenging,” she shared on her wife Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show in 2018. “I had a good idea of what my acting career would look like for the next decade or two, so I decided to leave acting and start my own business instead.”
Her company, General Public, which creates art for everyone, was almost complete—she just needed to finish one last piece.
I spoke with Mitch Hurwitz, the creator of Arrested Development, and told him I was done with acting, so I wouldn’t be in a potential season five. He was very understanding and supportive, and we had a good talk. Surprisingly, he ended up writing me into five episodes anyway.

It’s understandable why, after winning three Oscars, an actor might consider what else there is to achieve. Following his sixth Academy Award nomination for his 2017 film, Phantom Thread, the actor announced through his representative that he was retiring from acting. He expressed deep gratitude to those he’d worked with and his audiences over the years, and stated that this was a personal decision, with no further comments to be made.
Just as Daniel Day-Lewis had announced his retirement from acting, a new project drew him back in. In October 2024, Focus Features revealed he would star in Anemone, a film he co-wrote with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, who will also be directing.

Bridgit Mendler, known for her role in Good Luck Charlie, left acting in 2018 to focus on her education. She earned both a master’s degree and a PhD from MIT, and later attended Harvard Law School.
On top of everything else, Bridgit started her own company, Northwood Space, in February 2023. The company is building ground stations to facilitate communication with satellites, and Bridgit is serving as its CEO.
