The Holy Grail of DC Action Figures is On eBay Right Now For the First Time in Years

DC Comics fans have always been willing to pay a lot for toys from Ideal’s short-lived ‘Super Queens’ line. Released in 1967, it was the first time Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Mera, and Batgirl (who had just been created) were available as action figures with moving parts.

You can often find Batgirl and Supergirl action figure prototypes for sale on sites like eBay or at auctions. However, Wonder Woman and Mera figures are much harder to come by, particularly if they’re still in their original packaging. Currently, all four ‘Super Queens’ figures are being sold together as one lot on eBay – a chance to own the complete set, though it will cost you $200,000.

What Are DC’s Super Queens Toys?

These figures were created using bodies from Ideal’s Tammy and Misty dolls – rivals to Barbie. They were designed to be companions to Ideal’s Captain Action line, which included heroes from both Marvel and DC comics. Each figure came with accessories unique to their character, and all but Mera also included a second outfit to show their secret identity.

As a fan, I noticed Ideal took some creative freedoms with their Wonder Woman figure – she’s got this shield that actually came from Captain Action’s Captain America line, and they dressed her as a nurse! It’s fun, even though Diana Prince never worked as one in the comics. But honestly, the coolest accessory has to be Supergirl’s little Krypto the Superdog! He doesn’t move, but he’s just so cute and perfect with her.

Supergirl and Batgirl action figures generally sell for between $1,000 and $3,000 on eBay, but the price depends a lot on how well they’ve been preserved. It’s harder to say how much Mera and Wonder Woman figures are worth because they don’t come up for sale often. However, a Wonder Woman figure in its original box sold for nearly $5,000 at a 2002 Heritage auction, and someone once offered $8,000 for the same figure back in 2012.

A Super Queens Mera action figure sold for just $2,700 at a 2002 Heritage auction, even though its box was damaged. In 2020, Hakes sold a Mera in perfect condition, still in its original box, for $10,000. While both of those prices are significant, they’re much lower than the current $200,000 asking price for this Wonder Woman collection. The main reason for the high price is the excellent condition of the items.

What Makes These Figures So Collectible?

What’s most impressive about this auction is how well-preserved the figures are. The cardboard boxes they came in are easily damaged, often getting crushed or bent, but these have held up surprisingly well. Even more remarkably, all four figures are still sealed in their original plastic wrap – a rare find, particularly for the Mera and Wonder Woman figures. While Mera’s box shows a little warping and Batgirl’s is crushed – typical for figures of this age – Wonder Woman’s packaging is in perfect, like-new condition, appearing as if it just came off the shelf from 1967.

Okay, so $200,000 is a lot of money, I get it! But someone out there clearly thinks this is worth it – as of right now, it looks like someone has actually added it to their cart! That means there’s a serious DC Comics collector out there who’s at least thinking about grabbing this incredibly rare piece. It’s a one-of-a-kind listing, and someone’s definitely considering making it theirs.
