Marvel Writer Confirms MCU Approach to X-Men And Shocking Number of Characters They’re Considering

For a long time, fans wondered if the X-Men would ever join the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the X-Men had their own movies at 20th Century Fox, it seemed unlikely they’d connect with the other Marvel heroes on screen. However, when Disney acquired Fox, the rights to the X-Men returned to Marvel, finally paving the way for them to become a major part of the MCU in the future.

We’ve already seen great things like Deadpool & Wolverine and the revival of X-Men ’97 (though that series isn’t part of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline). Now, a proper MCU version of the X-Men is in development, and the writer, Lee Sung Jin (creator of Beef), has shared some exciting updates. He says the team has a strong, focused idea for the project, prioritizing beloved characters while still capturing the relationships and dramatic storylines fans enjoy from the comics. He also described the collaborative creative process with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito as a fun and open brainstorming experience.

MCU X-Men Reboot Considering EVERY Character

In an interview with Deadline, Lee explained that developing the new X-Men film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe has allowed for more creative flexibility in crafting the story and choosing team members. He contrasted this with his previous Marvel project, Thunderbolts, where he had to carefully integrate numerous established storylines and characters. Unlike Thunderbolts, the X-Men project offers a fresh start with significant freedom.

According to Lee, director Jake Schreier really wanted to focus on the characters and capture the spirit of the original X-Men comics by Chris Claremont, which were known for their strong team interactions and dramatic storylines. Lee also praised the collaborative environment with Kevin and Louis D’Esposito, describing their creative instincts as inspiring and allowing for open brainstorming.

Lee shared how much he loved the X-Men comics as a kid, recalling watching the cartoon with his father every Saturday. He said this made the opportunity to work on the movie particularly thrilling. He then revealed they are considering a huge number of X-Men characters for the film.

It’s incredibly exciting to be in a room where we can discuss every X-Men character and freely brainstorm ideas, knowing we’re not limited to playing it safe. This approach allows us to create a truly fresh and thrilling story.

For fans familiar with Marvel comics, listing “Every X-Men character” suggests a huge number of potential mutants for the MCU films. The history of the X-Men proves there are plenty of characters to build an entire movie universe around – and previous movies didn’t even use many of the most important ones.

Considering that key X-Men characters like Forge, Rachel Summers, and Mister Sinister were left out of the previous films, the potential of Marvel Studios’ new movie is truly impressive. Plus, characters like Kitty Pryde, Havok, and even Apocalypse deserve better portrayals, and the MCU offers a chance to showcase them accurately alongside other heroes like the Avengers and Spider-Man.

Lee hinted at exciting things to come in the new X-Men film, explaining his main focus is creating a movie he himself would have been thrilled to see as a younger fan. He’s committed to taking risks and truly honoring the source material, which longtime X-Men readers will appreciate.

One question still hangs over Marvel’s plans for introducing the X-Men. We likely won’t have an answer for several years. Right now, it looks like we might not see the X-Men appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe until after the Avengers: Secret Wars movie – meaning 2028 is the earliest possible timeframe. While there’s talk that Sadie Sink could play an X-Men character in this summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, this hasn’t been confirmed, and even if it happens, it doesn’t necessarily mean she’ll continue playing that role when the X-Men are officially introduced.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really excited about how the X-Men will eventually join the MCU. It sounds like it won’t be just slotted in – instead, it’ll happen as things are being reshaped after Secret Wars, almost like a fresh start for everything. We don’t know yet who will lead the charge when that happens, but I’m so glad Marvel isn’t limiting itself to the same handful of heroes we’ve seen over and over. The potential with the X-Men is incredible, and I’m really hoping this reboot truly delivers on that magic.
