While many highly anticipated movies are still coming out in 2026, we’re especially excited for Christopher Nolan’s new fantasy film. Nolan has been a celebrated director since the late 1990s, consistently delivering acclaimed movies like Memento, The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar, Tenet, and Oppenheimer. This next film promises to be another major achievement in his impressive career.
I’m incredibly excited for Christopher Nolan’s take on The Odyssey! It’s amazing to think he’s bringing to life a story that’s over 2,700 years old – truly the oldest surviving piece of literature! Knowing Nolan, and with a tale that unfolds over two decades, this adaptation is shaping up to be a massive, epic fantasy film. I’ve been eagerly awaiting this, and July 17, 2026, can’t come soon enough!
The Odyssey Tells An Almost 3000-Year-Old Story Spanning 20 Years
The story centers around Odysseus, the heroic king of Ithaca. It recounts his adventures during the Trojan War and the decade-long journey back home to Ithaca. Throughout his travels, Odysseus and his crew encounter numerous dangers, leaving him as the only one to ultimately return to his wife, family, and kingdom.
Homer’s Odyssey is arguably the most famous, enduring, and intricate fantasy story ever told. So it wasn’t surprising when Universal Pictures announced in December 2024 that Christopher Nolan would be directing a new film adaptation of the epic poem. The Odyssey has been adapted before; notable versions include the 1954 film Ulysses, featuring Kirk Douglas, the Coen Brothers’ loosely inspired O Brother, Where Art Thou? from 2000, and the 2024 release The Return, which stars Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche.
Nolan’s upcoming film aims for an authentic retelling of the classic tale, grounding it in a realistic interpretation of Greek mythology. He’s using impressive special effects, sound, set design, and strong characters to bring the story to life. At nearly three hours long—a considerable length even by Nolan’s standards—the movie might still only cover a condensed version of this epic narrative. Many believe it could be the fantasy film event of the decade, or even longer, and that’s a view most people share.
The Odyssey Has One of Cinema’s Most Stacked Casts Ever
A major reason to look forward to The Odyssey is its incredible cast. Matt Damon, known for The Martian, signed on first – he’s worked with director Nolan before on films like Oppenheimer and Interstellar. Tom Holland (The Impossible) joined the project, as did other frequent Nolan collaborators Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises) and Robert Pattinson (Tenet). Damon will play Odysseus, Holland will be Telemachus, Hathaway is Penelope, and Pattinson will portray Antinous in this new adaptation of The Odyssey.
Alongside these central characters, The Odyssey also features a remarkable cast including Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra (played by Lupita Nyong’o), Athena (Zendaya), Calypso (Charlize Theron), Agamemnon (Benny Safdie), Menelaus (Jon Bernthal), the Cyclops Polyphemus (Bill Irwin), Circe (Samantha Morton), Eurylochus (Himesh Patel), Melanthius (Logan Marshall-Green), his sister Melantho (Mia Goth), and a wealth of other talented performers.
John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Jimmy Gonzales, Andrew Howard, and a large ensemble of other actors will play the sailors who journey with Odysseus. Rapper Travis Scott will make an appearance as a bard – a storyteller – reflecting how the story of The Odyssey was originally shared through spoken word and poetry. Corey Hawkins, Elliot Page, Jesse Garcia, Rafi Gavron, Ryan Hurst, Maurice Compte, Iddo Goldberg, Josh Stewart, Michael Vlamis, Nick E. Tarabay, Shiloh Fernandez, Sean Avery, Jovan Adepo, Ian Casselberry, Anthony Molinari, James Remar, and numerous other performers will also be featured in currently unnamed roles.
Landing a role in The Odyssey is a major achievement for any Hollywood actor. Stars like Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal see this film as the start of an incredible 2026, leading into projects like Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Dune: Part Three, and Avengers: Doomsday. For one actor in particular, The Odyssey represents his first leading role working with this director, and he’s embracing the opportunity.
Christopher Nolan Is the Perfect Filmmaker to Bring The Odyssey to Life
Christopher Nolan is the perfect director to bring Homer’s The Odyssey to the big screen – arguably more so than anyone else working today. This film promises to be massive in scope, and Nolan has a proven track record of handling large, impactful stories. His skill as a filmmaker, combined with his dedication to quality and immersive IMAX filmmaking, suggests this adaptation will be in excellent hands.
Christopher Nolan began his career as a feature film director in 1998 with Following, a film that hinted at his future talent despite its small $6,000 budget. He followed this with critically acclaimed and now highly influential movies like Memento (2000), Insomnia (2002), The Prestige (2006), and Inception (2010). While these established his reputation, his more recent work has made him even more well-known.
Christopher Nolan’s 2014 science fiction film, Interstellar, is widely considered a landmark achievement, and he followed it up with the highly praised war drama Dunkirk in 2017. In 2020, he released Tenet, a complex and mind-bending story featuring John David Washington. Most recently, Nolan directed Oppenheimer, a film about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb, starring Cillian Murphy. This film finally earned Nolan his first Academy Awards for both Best Director and Best Picture.
Following his recent success, Nolan immediately began working on The Odyssey. This film, starring a talented cast, will bring one of history’s most famous stories to the big screen. It’s expected to be a massive, and potentially career-defining, project for Nolan, and is poised to be a major summer blockbuster – possibly even one of the biggest films of the 21st century.
