James Gunn, one of the co-CEOs at DC Studios, has an excellent chance to incorporate Henry Cavill, a previous DC actor, into his upcoming reboot of the Superman film. Known for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad (both DC projects), Gunn is set to introduce a fresh perspective on the DC universe with his interconnected DCU. Rather than continuing with actors from the previous era of DC movies (Cavill, Gal Gadot, and Jason Momoa), he’s planning to introduce a new ensemble of comic book characters, beginning with David Corenswet as Superman.
Despite Gunn being forthcoming about various aspects of the upcoming “Superman” movie, he has remained silent on the matter of how the Kryptonian parents of Superman will be portrayed in this new film. In most Superman tales, audiences are accustomed to seeing a blend of Kal-El’s human and Kryptonian heritage, with well-known actors like Marlon Brando, Kevin Costner, and Russell Crowe taking on the roles of either set of parents throughout the years.
On July 11, the latest iteration of James Gunn’s Superman, featuring David Corenswet as both Superman/Clark Kent, is set to premiere in cinemas. In this film, Corenswet takes on the leading role, facing off against Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, and striving to safeguard his dear ones, including Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane.
The upcoming movie directed by the creator of Guardians of the Galaxy marks the beginning of a fresh perspective for DC Studios’ DC Universe, which aspires (theoretically) to compete with the cinematic universe built by Marvel Studios.
A DCU Henry Cavill Superman Cameo Just Makes Sense
Fans have been puzzled for quite some time now over a specific detail regarding James Gunn’s interpretation of Superman.
Instead of delving deeply into Superman’s Kryptonian roots, the director appears to be concentrating more on his Earthly parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent (portrayed by Neva Howell and Pruitt Taylor Vince in the upcoming movie), as we approach its premiere.
It’s possible that Gunn might be concealing some well-known actors to portray Superman’s biological parents, Jor-El and Kara, in his adaptation. But could it be that Henry Cavill, surprisingly, is keeping a low profile within the movie itself?
In these Superman films, it’s common to find a well-known actor portraying the character Jor-El, who serves as a guiding influence for the specific interpretation of DC’s famous blue-clad hero.
To this point, characters resembling Marlon Brando and Russell Crowe have appeared on the silver screen. Given this, who could be more fitting than the latest one wearing the family crest to inherit both the Superman identity and the House of El within the storyline?
Instead of just enjoying the idea of Tom Cruise playing the role (who’s been a top choice for this part for quite some time), Cavill believes he deserves a chance to show what he can do with it as well.
As a devoted movie lover, I can’t help but reflect on Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman in “Man of Steel.” Regardless of personal opinions about his tenure as the iconic superhero, it’s hard to deny that he was somewhat underserved in the role.
Under the DCEU umbrella, he only starred in a single solo movie. Unfortunately, some of his films within this genre received negative reviews. Just as it seemed like he was set for a comeback with an end-credit appearance in “Black Adam,” unexpectedly, plans were changed and his opportunity was taken away.
Introducing Henry Cavill once more as Jor-El seems like an ideal method to pay tribute to his enduring portrayal of the character, ensuring he plays a significant role in this particular series without overly binding him to the broader DC Universe.
For individuals curious about why Gunn might incorporate an actor previously linked to the franchise, it appears that the director of Superman is eager to reintroduce actors from the DC Extended Universe as fresh characters instead.
In a recent confirmation, Jason Momoa, famously known for his role as Aquaman in the DCEU, will portray the DC Comics anti-hero Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl film. It’s also rumored that there have been discussions with other parties regarding his potential reprisal of the role.
Indeed, not long after assuming the position as co-CEO at DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, Gunn revealed in an online post that he had discussions with Cavill regarding several intriguing opportunities for collaboration.
One character on our list is ‘Superman.’ Initially, our tale will delve into an earlier phase of Superman’s existence, meaning Henry Cavill won’t portray him. We recently had a fantastic discussion with Henry and we’re huge admirers, exploring various intriguing collaborative opportunities for us down the line.
Perhaps Jor-El could have been one of the “intriguing options” that were concealed by both Gunn and Cavill all along.
