The forthcoming “Spider-Man: Fresh Start” movie has added two more characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to its roster, as announced on Friday. The latest cast members for the upcoming Spider-Man film have been revealed, and they are none other than Mark Ruffalo reprising his role as the Hulk and Michael Mando returning as Scorpion, which has sparked much excitement among fans. Interestingly, it’s Michael Mando’s return as Scorpion that has left many surprised, while Ruffalo’s comeback as the Hulk was expected. The news about the cast additions follows the official unveiling of the new Spider-Man suit by Marvel Studios and Sony earlier in the day.
The production of Tom Holland’s new Spider-Man film titled “Spider-Man: Fresh Start” is gaining momentum, with Destin Daniel Cretton stepping in to direct from Jon Watts. The screenplay for this latest Spider-Man adventure was written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who have previously contributed to the scripts of the past three films featuring Holland. Previously, images suggested by Cretton’s assistant hinted at potential appearances of characters like Mando as Scorpion, Boomerang, Tarantula, and Venom in the movie. However, it’s uncertain if these characters will actually appear, given that the film’s cast is already quite full.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mark Ruffalo and Mando have been cast for the upcoming Spider-Man movie, making them the latest additions to this film. Previously, it was announced that Jon Bernthal’s Punisher would transition from television to cinema for the first time within the Marvel Universe. Bernthal initially played the Punisher in Netflix’s Defenders universe, starring in the popular Daredevil series before headlining his own spinoff show. At present, he is filming a Punisher special for Marvel Studios and Disney+, having reprised his role in Daredevil: Born Again.
Mark Ruffalo’s last portrayal of the Hulk was in the Disney+ series, “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” There’s been much talk about the Hulk’s future, with whispers persisting that a World War Hulks project might be underway, although Marvel Studios has never lent credence to these rumors. Officially, Ruffalo’s last outing as the Hulk on the silver screen was in “Avengers: Endgame,” even though he made a brief reappearance as Bruce Banner during the end credits of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” However, it remains uncertain how significant the Hulk’s role will be in the upcoming film. According to recent reports, while there were rumors about the Hulk appearing in the movie for some time, his inclusion was only confirmed once the script was fully developed.
Since Spider-Man entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe through an agreement between Marvel Studios and Sony, he’s been teaming up with different characters. In “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” he partnered with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, followed by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in “Spider-Man: Far from Home.” The latest Spider-Man film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” featured Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. Given these collaborations, it’s not unexpected that he’ll team up with another major Marvel Cinematic Universe character, specifically the Hulk, in an upcoming project.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
