The blend of Deadpool and Batman is already setting up to surpass what comic book enthusiasts have long imagined. Known as the Merc with a Mouth and the Dark Knight, these rival superheroes from Marvel Comics and DC will launch their latest crossover collaboration in September, starting with Marvel’s “Deadpool/Batman” #1 and followed by DC’s “Batman/Deadpool” #1 in November. The anticipation has been building as we’ve seen cover art teasing the grand event, but now we have interior pages that are so thrilling they could easily be adapted into a blockbuster movie.
In issue #1 of the Deadpool/Batman comic, penned by Zeb Wells and illustrated by Greg Capullo, the central narrative unfolds. It depicts Deadpool crashing through a window at Wayne Manor, where he encounters Bruce Wayne. Rather than engaging in combat, these two protagonists seem to establish a connection as Wade Wilson casts his gaze upon a portrait of Alfred Pennyworth adorning the wall. As they stroll along, both characters exchange glances – Bruce eyeing the gun holstered on Deadpool’s hip, and Deadpool receiving an intense stare from Bruce.
The concluding scene in the first issue of Deadpool/Batman comic book finds Jim Gordon on a rooftop with the Bat-signal illuminated, yet instead of Batman showing up, it’s Deadpool who appears. Suspicious and unarmed, Gordon displays his gun hidden inside his coat. This short exchange offers a tantalizing glimpse into what readers can anticipate from Deadpool/Batman #1.
Deadpool/Batman Already Features Some Must-See Moments
In the debut issue of Deadpool/Batman, you’ll find backup stories featuring Daredevil and Green Arrow, written by Kevin Smith and Adam Kubert, as well as Jeff the Land Shark and Krypto, penned by Kelly Thompson and Gurihiru. Additional team-ups not included are Captain America and Wonder Woman by Chip Zdarsky and Terry Dodson, Rocket Raccoon and Green Lantern by Al Ewing and Dike Ruan, Wolverine (Old Man Logan) and Batman (The Dark Knight Returns) by Frank Miller.
In a challenging encounter, Green Arrow and Daredevil join forces against a horde of ninjas. Their intense battle is evident by the tattered state of their colorful outfits. The ninjas that Green Arrow targets are suspected to belong to The Hand. Meanwhile, Jeff the Land Shark and Krypto are enjoying a sweet game of fetch at the Fortress of Solitude.
Fans of superheroes eagerly anticipate these special moments when their favorite characters team up. The thrill is already high when heroes from the same universe collaborate, but it becomes even more exhilarating when heroes from different publishers join forces – sometimes clashing as well. Fortunately, Marvel and DC have not limited these crossovers to mere occasional encounters. Instead, they are giving fans numerous instances of their beloved heroes working together, and skilled creators are bringing these collaborations to life on the page. While it might seem improbable, these types of crossovers could potentially become a reality in movies and television shows as well someday.
When Gotham City finds itself on the brink of peril, it’s none other than Deadpool who makes an appearance,” I shared with IGN during a recent interview. “Batman isn’t particularly fond of Deadpool, and Wade’s viewpoint towards Batman is…well, let’s just say it’s as unconventional as our favorite Merc with a Mouth himself.
Capullo mentioned that for him, it feels like he’s bookending his career with the projects he’s working on now. He previously drew Deadpool when he was part of X-Force, and more recently, he had a lengthy stint on Batman. To him, this is really quite remarkable.
