In the second season of “Peacemaker,” there’s a stronger commitment to DC Universe consistency as it welcomes back six actors from James Gunn’s “Superman” movie. The crossover, hinted at in trailers and marketing materials, underscores the growing interconnectedness of this rebooted universe. While these returning characters will likely have guest appearances, their presence still significantly contributes to expanding this fresh continuity.
As a fan, I appreciate how the DCEU paved the way for these iconic characters, but what excites me most is James Gunn’s acknowledgment that the narrative moving forward will redefine certain aspects of those characters, specifically from “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker,” offering a fresh perspective on their stories.
Instead of totally abandoning the past, Gunn has depicted the DCEU as “vague recollections” within the new DCU. This mix of old and new elements has led to some fan confusion, but Season 2 of Peacemaker is anticipated to be a significant milestone in solidifying the canon of the DCU more clearly.
The blend of elements between Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 is a logical progression since both shows were partially filmed in Atlanta concurrently, sharing some cast and crew members. This behind-the-scenes connection subtly strengthens the on-screen relationships.
In the upcoming series “Peacemaker,” six actors previously seen in the “Superman” franchise are joining the cast, demonstrating the interconnected nature of this fresh universe. Additionally, there are three other projects scheduled for release in 2026.
Peacemaker
In the series Superman, Peacemaker doesn’t engage in physical combat, but he does appear on a late-night television talk show where he criticizes Superman’s no-kill policy and challenges his moral stature. His blunt, confrontational remarks establish him as a contentious figure within the DC Universe for future developments.
In Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” set one month after the previous events, Chris finds himself battling to gain credibility in a world that remains skeptical towards him. Judging by the latest trailer, this season will see him venturing into an alternate reality where he is revered, but at a considerable price. The upcoming season promises to increase both the action (with not one, but two Peacemakers engaged in combat) and the absurdity, featuring a fresh musical number and balls filled with explosive liquid as weapons.
Guy Gardner
In the film Superman, Guy Gardner, portrayed by Nathan Fillion, represents Maxwell Lord’s (Sean Gunn) Justice League on Earth. Initially, he butts heads with Superman before eventually teaming up with him to counter Lex Luthor’s massive monster threat and protect Jarhanpur.
In the second season of Peacemaker, Fillion once again plays his character alongside Hawkgirl and Lord, during a scene where they are recruiting for their team. However, Peacemaker’s audition doesn’t go well as Gardner and others mock him. It is expected that this Green Lantern character will have a larger role in the HBO series Lanterns, set to air in 2026.
Hawkgirl
Isabela Merced initially appeared as Kendra Saunders in the series Superman, a character within the Justice Gang who refused to assist Superman even when Lois Lane begged for it. However, she eventually atoned for her actions by joining efforts to defend the world against the Boravian invasion and ultimately taking down President Vasil Ghurkos.
In the second season of “Peacemaker,” I’m thrilled to be a part of the narrative as she steps back into action, this time assisting Maxwell Lord in evaluating Peacemaker for potential team membership. In interviews, she herself has revealed that the storyline of “Superman” plays a significant role in the development of “Peacemaker,” a connection Gunn has reinforced by stating that Season 2 unfolds just one month after the events of “Superman.
Maxwell Lord
Maxwell Lord’s cameo in Superman is short but significant: towards the film’s end, during a montage, a news broadcast unexpectedly shows Lord exiting a limousine adorned with LordTech logos, standing in front of an unfinished Hall of Justice. The flash of cameras triggers him to smirk and make a sharp remark to the reporters: “It seems that even the left and right can find common ground in disliking Lex Luthor.
As soon as Lex (Nicholas Hoult) is unmasked as the hidden mastermind behind the Boravia-Jarhanpur conflict, it immediately sets Lord up as a potential adversary among the billionaires, starting to shape the emerging political landscape following Luthor’s influence.
In the upcoming season 2 of “Peacemaker,” I, as a devoted cinephile, am thrilled to share that the enigmatic figure known as Lord makes a return to the scene! This time, he’s not alone – he’s joined by Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl, forming an intriguing trio. Their mission? To evaluate Chris Smith for potential membership within their ranks.
However, let me clarify that, given Peacemaker’s unpredictable nature, it’s unlikely we’ll see him sticking around the Justice Gang for too long. So, if you’re a fan of Lord’s antics, don’t expect his appearance to be a lengthy one!
Rick Flag Sr.
In the movie titled “Superman“, Frank Grillo once again took on the character of Rick Flag Sr., this time portraying him as the U.S. Defense Secretary, significantly influencing the government’s actions during Superman’s involvement in the conflict between Boravia and Jarhanpur.
In the intense Pentagon gathering between Superman and Lex Luthor, the flag exhibited a measured degree of skepticism rather than outright mistrust, remarking that while Superman’s actions might be deemed naive, they were undeniably driven by good intentions.
He doubts Luthor’s reasons for wanting to use metahuman power through PlanetWatch and thinks it might be a bad idea. However, when Superman willingly gives himself up, Flag takes charge of his arrest and claims that as an alien, Superman doesn’t have the same rights. In the end, the movie shows Flag watching from the Pentagon as the Justice League stops the attack on Jarhanpur, suggesting that metahumans are becoming more influential in global matters.
In the context of current political events, Flag makes his comeback in “Peacemaker” Season 2, as the plot thickens and the conflict takes a personal turn for him. Grieving over the loss of his son at the hands of Peacemaker, Flag Sr. is anticipated to confront Smith head-on, with revenge on his mind.
Cleavis Thornwaite
As a devoted cinephile, I found myself captivated by the role of Cleavis Thornwaite, the late-night TV host, played to perfection by Michael Ian Black. In this intriguing narrative, Cleavis conducts an interview with the infamous Lex Luthor, while subtly ridiculing Superman – a character known for manipulating public opinion regarding metahumans. The charismatic John Cena made his memorable entrance in this scene.
In the upcoming season 2 of “Peacemaker,” it’s been verified that Michael Ian Black will once again play Thornwaite. The specific amount of screen time for this character is still undetermined, but it could be that he will continue to depict the media’s portrayal of heroes in the show. With Superman displaying his human qualities within the DCU, there might even be a change in how Thornwaite interacts with Peacemaker.
