Thor’s Worst MCU Movie Created a Confusing Avengers: Infinity War Problem

Initially, in the epic battle against Thanos during ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘, Thor took on a massive mission within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, his subsequent solo film ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ suggested that the God of Thunder might have unnecessarily complicated this task. Ever since his debut in 2011, Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of Thor has been pivotal to every ‘Avengers’ crossover event. In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, Thor faced his toughest test, but it turned out in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ that he unintentionally added more difficulty to the task at hand.

Following the releases of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Chris Hemsworth reappeared in Thor: Love and Thunder, making him the only character to star in four standalone movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Regrettably, Love and Thunder didn’t replicate the triumph of its 2017 forerunner, Thor: Ragnarok, and has been generally perceived as one of Thor’s less impressive entries. In Love and Thunder, Thor pursued Gorr the God Butcher (played by Christian Bale), who aimed to attain Eternity and make a wish to eliminate all gods in the MCU – sparking speculation as to why Thor didn’t employ this option during Avengers: Infinity War.

In the movie “Avengers: Infinity War,” Thor joined forces with Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel), members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, on a mission to reach Nidavellir. There, he intended to create a weapon powerful enough to harm Thanos (Josh Brolin). In “Endgame,” this weapon, Stormbreaker, managed to injure and ultimately behead Thanos. However, despite this, Thanos still carried out his devastating plan. It was later revealed in “Love and Thunder” that Stormbreaker holds the key to an altar of Eternity, which could have made it simpler for Thor to utilize it to access the cosmic entity and wish away Thanos’ conquest.

In Thor: Love and Thunder, it was proposed that whoever arrived first at the Altar of Eternity could make a wish, and whatever they wished for would be granted. Gorr desired the gods’ demise, but Thor had the chance to arrive there first and request the elimination of Thanos and his armies. This would have prevented Thanos from obtaining all six Infinity Stones, snapping his fingers, and erasing half of all existence in the universe. Consequently, this could have spared us five years of distress and turmoil, potentially saving Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) from the fate that followed.

It’s puzzling as to why Thor chose not to travel to Eternity during “Avengers: Infinity War,” given his understanding of the entity. If he had gone there first, the universe would have been spared the Blip, the deaths of characters like Iron Man and Black Widow could have been avoided, and Gorr’s campaign against the MCU’s gods might not have begun. The future of Eternity remains uncertain, but as a cosmic entity, it could play a significant role in “Avengers: Doomsday,” “Avengers: Secret Wars,” and future stories within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
