A ‘90s Sci-Fi Cult Classic Just Joined Paramount+ (But It’s Modern Remake Is Hard To Find)

As a huge sci-fi fan, I was thrilled to see a ’90s classic finally hit Paramount+ – it’s a real cult favorite! But it’s a bit frustrating that they didn’t include the 2012 remake alongside it. Paramount+ has a fantastic selection of sci-fi, everything from all things Star Trek to films like Interstellar, so I was hoping for the full package. They added a great ’90s movie in April, which is awesome, but it’s a shame its updated version didn’t make the cut.

As a huge sci-fi fan, I was thrilled to see Total Recall land on Paramount+! The original 1990 film with Arnold Schwarzenegger is a classic – a construction worker gets implanted with fake memories of a Mars trip, and things quickly spiral into a crazy conspiracy where he has to figure out who he really is – turns out he’s a secret agent! With all the reboots happening in Hollywood, a remake came out in 2012 with Colin Farrell, but it’s been surprisingly hard to find where to stream it. Right now, it looks like Fandango at Home is the only place offering it, and it’s not available on any of the big streaming services.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Total Recall Is One of the Most Rewatchable Sci-Fi Films of the 1990s

Considered both a cult classic and one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made, Total Recall remains impressive even after repeated viewings. The movie expertly combines Arnold Schwarzenegger’s charisma with Paul Verhoeven’s satirical style, delivering a thrilling, fast-paced adventure. It’s notable for its detailed world-building – from the futuristic landscapes of Mars to its mutants and advanced technology – and its remarkably effective practical effects, which still look better than many modern CGI creations. Decades later, the film’s ambiguous storyline continues to spark debate about what’s real and what’s a fabricated memory. Despite being a famously violent action film – originally rated X for its shootings, stabbings, gore, and graphic imagery before being edited to earn an R rating – Total Recall also explores complex themes like fascism and the power of the media.

The original Total Recall is a beloved 90s sci-fi film, earning an 81% approval rating from critics and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. While the 2012 remake didn’t achieve the same popularity, it missed the playful humor and satirical edge that made the first film special. Instead, it felt like a generic, overly dramatic action movie, and it relied too much on computer-generated effects instead of the practical effects that fans loved in the original.

Other Sci-Fi Movies Now on Paramount+

I was so excited to see what Paramount+ offered in April – it was a fantastic month for sci-fi fans like me! They added classics like Total Recall, Arrival, Deep Impact, and Galaxy Quest, plus a bunch of Terminator movies. But get this – May 1st is going to be even bigger! The entire Battlestar Galactica universe is coming to the streamer, including the original miniseries, all four seasons of the reboot, Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, and even the Caprica series. Seriously, if you’re a sci-fi fan, you won’t want to miss this!
