A Minecraft Sequel Set Photos Reveal First Look At Jack Black’s Return With Tweaked Steve Design

Jack Black is back again, as photos from A Minecraft Sequel emerge.

The recent movie based on the popular game Minecraft, called A Minecraft Movie, was a big hit. While it didn’t earn quite as much as The Super Mario Bros. Movie (which made $1.36 billion worldwide), it still grossed an impressive $960 million globally. Both films featured Jack Black, and audiences can look forward to sequels for both Minecraft and Super Mario Bros.

I’m so excited! They’ve finally announced the release date for the new Minecraft Sequel – July 23, 2027! And even better, we’re getting glimpses of Jack Black back as Steve! The Valley Profile shared some new pictures, and a TikTok user, user2746avgeek, posted a video from the set. It looks like they started filming in Huntly, New Zealand, and recently moved to a second location in Thames, New Zealand. I can’t wait to see more!

The video shows Black driving Steve’s unique food truck, nicknamed “Lava Chicken.” It features a large, block-shaped chicken on its roof and is a nod to the original movie where Steve first unveiled it. The truck inspired a catchy, viral song about the unlikely combination of “hot lava and chicken.”

Huntly and Thames, the towns where the movie was filmed, are both small communities. Thames has a population of around 7,000, while Huntly is home to about 8,500 people. The arrival of such a large Hollywood production is a significant event for these towns, as one traffic controller noted, “Something like this doesn’t happen often in a place like Thames.”

Driving the new truck, Black acknowledged the cheers from fans, jokingly replying, “I’m not sure, perhaps tomorrow… I’ve been putting in some really long shifts!” The truck is eye-catching with its red and white stripes and features a service window and the name “Steve’s Lava Chicken” painted on the side.

A fully functioning food truck has sparked a lot of discussion on Reddit and TikTok, largely because of a memorable scene featuring a “Chicken Jockey” in the upcoming A Minecraft Movie. Since players can’t drive cars in the original Minecraft game, this suggests the film will introduce new elements and raises questions about how the game’s world will connect to real life.

Unlike the first movie, the new footage shows Steve wearing everyday clothes instead of his usual bright blue shirt. This more realistic outfit helps him fit in with the town of Chuglass, Idaho, and suggests he’s becoming more comfortable with his life on Earth. The truck he’s driving also reinforces this idea of him settling into a new identity.
