For over 20 years, Grey’s Anatomy has kept viewers on the edge of their seats with constant drama and heartbreaking events in Seattle. The show’s universe grew with the spinoff Station 19, and now ABC is adding another series set in the same world, promising even more stories from Washington state.
The announcement of the new spinoff came right after the season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy, which hinted at a dramatic season 23. However, the spinoff won’t explain what happened with Dr. Kwan, as actor Harry Shum Jr. had suggested. Instead of airing this fall with season 23, the spinoff is scheduled to premiere in 2027, along with new seasons of shows like High Potential, The Rookie, and Will Trent.
Building on the popularity of ABC’s 9-1-1 series and its successful spinoffs, this new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff has a strong starting point, especially compared to Station 19, which concluded in 2024. However, it differs enough from Station 19 to suggest a more sustainable future. This project represents a fresh direction for the franchise, moving the action to a hospital in rural Texas where doctors face unique challenges unlike those experienced at Grey Sloan Memorial.
Grey’s Anatomy’s Texas Spinoff Isn’t Reliant On The Flagship (Like Station 19 Was)
Details are still limited, but the new show will focus on a hospital in a very isolated part of West Texas – often the last place people can get medical help for a long distance. The show will likely tie into the original series, and reports suggest that Debbie Allen, who plays Catherine Fox on Grey’s Anatomy, might make an appearance to bridge the two shows.
Unlike its predecessor, the new show won’t depend heavily on connections to Grey’s Anatomy. Station 19 initially relied on Grey’s Anatomy by introducing a doctor from that series—Dr. Ben Warren, played by Jason George—to the world of firefighters. He even returned to Grey Sloan Memorial after Station 19 concluded. The two shows were often linked, airing together on Thursday nights on ABC and frequently featuring crossover events.
The two shows, Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy, had characters appearing in each other so often that it felt necessary to watch both to understand the full story. Even if you preferred one show over the other, you still needed to watch both, which eventually became tiring and annoying. Station 19 felt much more connected to Grey’s Anatomy than Private Practice, which starred Kate Walsh, ever did.
Although Station 19 ran for seven seasons and 105 episodes, achieving a good level of success for ABC, it largely benefited from its strong connection to Grey’s Anatomy. It’s almost expected to see characters from Station 19 appearing on Grey’s Anatomy, suggesting the former’s success was heavily tied to the established show.
Why A Texas-Based Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff Is Better Than Another Show Set In Seattle
To truly feel like its own show, the new series set in Texas needs to begin with a completely fresh start, even if characters from Grey’s Anatomy, like Catherine Fox, were to make an appearance. Despite initial reports about their departures, Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver didn’t leave Grey’s Anatomy to lead the spinoff as their characters, Owen and Teddy. In fact, the show is starting over so completely that ABC hasn’t even announced the official title yet.
This new series offers a different direction for a franchise that has previously explored spinoffs connected to Grey’s Anatomy. Private Practice was successful for ABC, though it was located in Los Angeles, a bit further away from Grey Sloan in Seattle – unlike Station 19. However, with Kate Walsh returning as Addison Montgomery, the link between Private Practice and Grey’s Anatomy remained clear.
The series has often introduced new shows by featuring characters from previous installments. The success of its two spinoffs so far has been closely tied to the world of Grey’s Anatomy, leading many to believe that Jackson and April’s reunion was intended to pave the way for a new spinoff set in Boston – a possibility that Jesse Williams himself has hinted at.
Moving the story to Texas offers a fresh start, allowing viewers to connect with characters and relationships without any preconceived notions or existing loyalties. This approach can make the show feel completely new while still remaining within the familiar world it’s built. We’ve seen this work well with 9-1-1: Lone Star for several seasons, and it’s proving successful again for ABC with 9-1-1: Nashville.
How Grey’s Anatomy’s Texas Spinoff Can Connect To The Flagship
Just because the new medical drama is set in Texas doesn’t mean it will be loosely tied to Grey’s Anatomy. Besides the possibility of Catherine Fox making appearances, many familiar faces from the original series—and even Station 19 and Private Practice—could also show up. We’ve already seen examples of this with former series regulars like Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew returning to Grey’s Anatomy, and Kate Walsh making guest appearances over the years. The new show could easily follow suit and bring back other beloved characters.
Given that the two hospitals seem to be part of the same organization – as Catherine’s involvement hints – it would be more logical to see characters move between Grey’s Anatomy and its new spin-off than between 9-1-1 and its shows. While doctors from Texas traveling to Seattle for emergencies like a ferry accident or hospital explosion might not be realistic, and the new hospital’s location presents logistical challenges, there’s still a potential for connections between the series.
Given the number of actors who’ve appeared on Grey’s Anatomy over the past 22 seasons, it’s likely some would be interested in making guest appearances on a potential spinoff. This new show could stay true to the original series in a way that appeals to longtime fans, but avoid feeling disjointed like some episodes of Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy did. ABC plans to launch the new Texas-based series right after season 23 of Grey’s Anatomy in 2027, giving the spinoff a major boost.
