Exciting news for fans of Absolute Batman! DC Comics is bringing two iconic villains into the series. When the series first launched a year and a half ago, it reimagined Batman’s history by portraying characters like Harvey Dent and Oswald Cobblepot as his lifelong friends, rather than enemies. But last year, Bane targeted those friends, attempting to destroy Batman by hurting the people closest to him. Now, Harvey and Oswald are finally becoming the villains they were originally destined to be.
DC Comics recently revealed details about Absolute Batman #21, including several variant covers. Artist Nick Draggota created some of these covers, showcasing updated looks for the villains Two-Face and Penguin. Two-Face now sports a stark black and white outfit and long white hair that visually divides the healthy and scarred sides of his face. Penguin appears weathered and diminished in height, with a hunched posture. He now relies on crutches that cleverly function as firearms, a significant departure from his traditional umbrella gun.
Absolute Batman’s Penguin and Two-Face Will Be Bruce’s Next Big Challenge

After witnessing the damage Bane inflicted on Bruce’s allies, we anticipated they would eventually turn into full-fledged villains. While recovering in the hospital, both men began to unravel due to their experiences. Harvey was already showing signs of his dual personality, and Oswald developed a deep resentment towards Bruce. They both hold Bruce responsible for their suffering and have cut him out of their lives, but we suspected it wouldn’t be long before they resurfaced as their ultimate, villainous selves.
As a longtime Batman fan, I’m really wondering where this latest story arc is going with Bruce. He’s trying to act like emotions don’t affect him, but come on, the guy feels everything deeply. He’s clearly still haunted by what happened to both Oswald and Harvey, and that’s a dangerous place to be. I’m betting Two-Face and Penguin are going to come after him, big time, and I’m genuinely curious to see if Batman will try to eliminate the threat, or if the weight of his role in creating those villains will finally throw him off his game. It’s a really compelling setup!
The introduction of Penguin and Two-Face is significant not just because it brings iconic Batman villains to life, but because it challenges Batman to confront the impact of his own actions. Bruce Wayne will be forced to acknowledge how his life as Batman has permanently altered his world and the lives of those around him. The recent focus on growth and change in the Batman storyline makes us question how Bruce himself will evolve in response to these villains becoming their worst selves.
