A simple conversation between Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier and a reader has been twisted online, leading some people to falsely claim Sony is upset with Naughty Dog.
A few days ago, journalist Jason Schreier posted his detailed report about Bungie on Bluesky, and that’s where this all began.
For those who missed it, the Washington studio is wrapping up support on Destiny 2, and doesn’t have a new project in the pipeline. Layoffs are expected at the Sony subsidiary, while it continues to support Marathon and plan out what’s next.
Lots of people wondered why the team didn’t begin work on Destiny 3 right after finishing The Final Shape in 2024, since that expansion seemed to wrap up the game’s main story.
“The answer, as it usually is, is how much money it would take,” Schreier wrote on Bluesky.
A reader replied: “A company that has no issue letting Naughty Dog spend 5+ years and $300 million on a single player title is now concerned about spending money on a new MMO shooter with a built in fanbase, just fantastic.”
To which Schreier said: “Oh they definitely have an issue with that.”
It seems like a pretty normal conversation, but Sony is likely worried about the lengthy development times for these games, particularly since production costs have significantly increased with this generation of consoles.
So, I was browsing Reddit earlier and saw a thread that really twisted Jason Schreier’s reporting. It made it sound like PlayStation was specifically upset with Naughty Dog, which wasn’t at all what he said! It was a total misrepresentation of his words.
Honestly, it was a total explosion on social media! The rumor spread like wildfire for about an hour before Jason Schreier finally addressed it. It was everywhere.
Writing on Reddit, he said:
I wouldn’t have to explain things if people would stop sharing my responses without the full context, and then twisting them with inaccurate tweets and headlines.
I mentioned Sony hadn’t approved Destiny 3 due to its high price. Someone then pointed out that Sony seemed okay with the costs of games made by Naughty Dog, but not Destiny 3. I replied that, of course, Sony also had concerns about how much Naughty Dog’s games cost.
And somehow that was misinterpreted by wide swaths of the Internet to mean that Sony is angry at Naughty Dog? Absurd.”
Stories like these often spread quickly online, and that’s why I frequently try to correct them – they usually go viral without anyone checking the facts or fixing any errors.
This leads to false narratives spreading, and unfortunately people rarely ever look into the actual sources.
It’s not surprising Sony worries about games taking longer to develop and costing more money. However, some misunderstandings about Jason Schreier’s statements made the situation appear more serious than it really was.
