Project Aces has shared new details about Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, the latest installment in the popular arcade flight combat series, giving us a better look at the story. A new feature allows players to experience story scenes from their character’s point of view, making the experience more immersive.
According to creative director Kosuke Itomi, previous games in the series focused on telling the player’s story from an outside perspective. This time, however, the game lets you experience the story directly, switching to a first-person viewpoint and giving you more control over how the narrative unfolds.
The reveal trailer hinted at this, but it’s good to have it officially confirmed. This change also makes sense given the story’s growing emphasis on relationships with your allies, who will develop alongside you throughout the game. You’ll even get to interact with them during downtime on your ship, The Endurance.
Itomi explains the name reflects the core idea: to persevere and remain afloat. The ship is designed as a safe haven for pilots, who affectionately call it ‘Mom.’ This approach creates a sense of realism, reminiscent of war films based on true stories, and grounds the narrative beyond simple fiction.
The latest installment in the popular flight combat series, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC later this year. It’s been four years since Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, and this new game returns to the world of Strangereal, set in 2029. The story follows pilots on the Endurance as they fight against the Republic of Sotoa to reclaim the Federation of Central Usea.
Players step into the role of a new pilot inheriting the famous title of “Wings of Theve” after the previous hero’s passing, making them the new leader. They’ll have the support of three allies in challenging aerial battles that are expected to be more thrilling than ever before.
