Adolescence Creator’s New Netflix Show Just Arrived (And It Adapts a 71-Year-Old Dystopian Classic)

Following the success of his crime drama Adolescence, Jack Thorne has a new series on Netflix. His adaptation of a classic dystopian novel, released on May 4th, explores similar themes of growing up, harmful ideas about masculinity, and how easily young boys can be led astray.

Netflix has released a new four-part series based on William Golding’s famous novel, Lord of the Flies. The story follows a group of British schoolboys who are stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. As they try to create a society, things quickly fall apart, leading to chaos and violence. This is director Nick Thorne’s first project for Netflix since Adolescence, and the first-ever TV adaptation of Golding’s classic novel. All four episodes became available on Netflix on May 4th.

Netflix’s Lord of the Flies Adaptation Is a Harrowing Retelling of William Golding’s Classic

Emily Baker of The i Paper called Thorne’s Lord of the Flies series a “psychedelic, scary, and brutal experience.” The show, boasting a 92% rating and a “Certified Fresh” label on Rotten Tomatoes, is a disturbing look at the worst parts of human nature. Unlike the original story, the series focuses on each boy individually in its four episodes, allowing for a deeper and more personal exploration of how quickly society breaks down when young people face intense pressure. Reviewers have also highlighted the powerful and realistic performances from the young actors, as well as Hans Zimmer’s haunting musical score, which enhances the show’s unsettling mood.

The show has received a somewhat mixed reaction from viewers. While people generally praise the young actors – especially David McKenna as Piggy – and the show’s dark and intense mood, as well as its depiction of the boys becoming increasingly wild, its audience rating currently stands at 57%. Some viewers feel the show prioritizes visual style over a strong story, with choices like fisheye lenses and heavy color grading detracting from the experience. Others believe that added backstory, particularly for the character of Jack, diminishes aspects of the original novel.

Will There Be a Lord of the Flies Season 2?

The new series Lord of the Flies is short and sweet, with only four episodes, making it easy to watch all at once. However, don’t expect a second season – it’s highly unlikely. This adaptation of Golding’s novel was designed as a one-time event, and since the book doesn’t have a sequel, there’s no more story to tell. Luckily for fans of the creator, William Golding, he is planning another season of his series Adolescence, but details are still limited.
