Invincible Creator Reveals the Spider-Man Movie He Thinks is “Dogsh*t” (& The One Redeeming Part)

Robert Kirkman is a seasoned comic book writer, well-known for creating original superheroes in titles like Super Dinosaur, The Astounding Wolf-Man, Firepower, and, of course, Invincible. He’s also worked with established heroes at Marvel. Besides his popular Marvel Zombies series, which featured a wide range of characters, Kirkman wrote The Irredeemable Ant-Man and the entire third series of Marvel Team-Up. His run on Marvel Team-Up primarily focused on Spider-Man, notably including issue #14 where Spider-Man crossed paths with Invincible.

Robert Kirkman, a longtime comic book writer and expert on superheroes, recently shared his blunt opinion on the 2014 film The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In an interview on The Escape Pod, he didn’t hesitate to call it “terrible, terrible… dogst,” despite generally avoiding public movie critiques. Given his experience, his assessment carries significant weight.

Robert Kirkman Roasts a Fan-Favorite Spider-Man

Kirkman didn’t just criticize the movie – which has a low 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the worst-rated Spider-Man film ever – he also pointed out some things he enjoyed. He said, “I love Jamie Foxx, but I also love Andrew Garfield, who I think is a fantastic Spider-Man. Both of those films have great moments, but this one feels really disjointed and chaotic.”

Kirkman is correct to point out that opinions on those Amazing Spider-Man films have shifted. While there’s been a wave of nostalgia since their release – especially with Andrew Garfield reprising his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home – they weren’t initially well-received. The second film, in particular, felt unfinished and focused more on future installments than telling a complete story. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was considered a significant failure, even forcing a major revamp of one of its returning villains, Electro, when he was reintroduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Kirkman finally addressed the initial question – what his favorite superhero trilogy was. After some thought, he jokingly said he’d give his answer only after the release of Incredibles 3.

The next Incredibles movie is scheduled to come out in 2028. Kirkman believes the first film is flawless, while the second is good, but the success of a potential third movie—and truly capturing the magic of the original—will be key to the trilogy’s overall quality.

Kirkman admitted he hasn’t rewatched “Incredibles 2,” and wasn’t particularly impressed with it the first time either. He felt it didn’t live up to his expectations, specifically because it immediately followed the events of the first movie instead of jumping ahead in time. He thought a time jump would have improved the sequel.

It remains to be seen how the story of the Incredibles will unfold when the next installment comes out on June 16, 2028. We’ll also have to wait and see if Andrew Garfield reprises his role as Spider-Man in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies.
