Adult Swim has become incredibly popular thanks to hit original shows like Rick and Morty and Smiling Friends, both of which have been renewed for multiple future seasons. Beyond creating its own unique content, the network has also been home to many classic animated series. Shows such as Family Guy, King of the Hill, American Dad!, and Bob’s Burgers all moved from Fox to air on Adult Swim, but now it looks like one long-running show is coming to an end. Get ready, Futurama fans, because things are about to change.
The animated series Futurama has had an on-again, off-again relationship with Cartoon Network, originally airing on Adult Swim in 2003. The show, about Fry, Leela, Bender, and their delivery crew, has been revived several times after initially ending on Fox. After leaving Adult Swim in 2007, it returned in 2021, but now it seems Futurama is leaving Cartoon Network again. Fans have only a few weeks left to watch it on the network. The series will be removed on Friday, December 26th, the day after Christmas, as part of a larger trend of Hulu taking its shows off other platforms—something they also did earlier this year with King of the Hill.
What Will Replace Futurama?

Now that Futurama has finished its run on Adult Swim, Home Movies will be taking its place. This ’90s show originally aired on UPN before gaining a following on Cartoon Network. It was one of the first shows to be part of Adult Swim’s experimental programming, and its creator, Brendon Small, later went on to create hits like Metalocalypse. Metalocalypse, the heavy metal series featuring the band Dethklok, ran for four seasons and included several specials.
Good news for fans of Futurama: a fourteenth season has been confirmed and is scheduled to arrive next year! While there’s no official word on a fifteenth season yet, the cast is hoping this isn’t the end for the Planet Express crew. Actor Billy West recently shared his optimism, saying he’s eager to return if the show is renewed, and plans to travel the world if it isn’t. He said, “I always say we are hopeful waiting to hear if they want to pick it up again for another season, and if they want to do that, I’m so there. And if not, I’m going to run away. I’m going to go traveling the world. What’s left of it.”
