All 3 Original Star Wars Movies Are Masterpieces, But One Is Untouchable

Star Wars is a classic science fiction series, and it’s easy to see why. With over ten films and numerous TV shows, it’s become a cultural icon, especially considering the impact of the first three movies on its fans.

The original Star Wars trilogy had a huge impact on science fiction and fantasy, and all three movies are enjoyable. However, while none are truly bad, some are stronger than others, and one stands out as a true classic.

Return of the Jedi Ended an Era in Star Wars

In Return of the Jedi, also known as Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, the Rebels launched a full-scale attack against the Empire. Luke Skywalker, now trained as a Jedi, rescued Han Solo and faced off against both Darth Vader and the Emperor. The film felt like a perfect, satisfying conclusion to the saga and lived up to expectations.

A highlight of Return of the Jedi is Luke’s climactic duel with Darth Vader. He’s forced to confront his own inner demons and a seemingly insurmountable enemy. Despite the odds, Luke understands that true strength isn’t about power, and this realization allows him to save both himself and his father from falling to the dark side, all while his friends bring the war to an end.

Unlike some sequels, Return of the Jedi didn’t try to introduce new, unnecessary storylines or make the ending overly complicated. It focused on providing a satisfying amount of drama and action while staying true to its characters. Even the Ewoks, which were controversial when the movie came out, are now a beloved part of the Star Wars universe. Return of the Jedi brought the original Galactic Civil War saga to a close, but it also paved the way for future stories and adventures.

A New Hope Kickstarted a Franchise That Has Endured For Decades

As a lifelong movie fan, I remember 1977 like it was yesterday. Star Wars – originally just Star Wars, then later Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope – completely shook things up. Before that, science fiction often meant sticking with established series like Doctor Who and Star Trek. But Star Wars offered something different: a huge, imaginative fantasy world and a timeless story. It gave us Luke Skywalker, this relatable young hero, teaming up with a wise mentor to rescue a princess – it was magic!

What truly makes A New Hope so memorable is its incredible impact. It captivated audiences with realistic space battles and kept them on the edge of their seats until Luke Skywalker destroyed the Death Star. That shared breath the audience takes right after is a perfect example of cinematic suspense, and remains one of the most thrilling moments in film history.

There’s a lot to enjoy in A New Hope, from the powerful Empire and Darth Vader to the classic rivalry between Vader and Obi-Wan, and the iconic Death Star. But beyond that, the film established the groundwork for decades of Star Wars storytelling. Many of its most memorable scenes and ideas have since blossomed into shows like Andor and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The Empire Strikes Back is One of the Best Sequels in all of Cinema

It’s tough to define a truly great sequel until you actually see one, and The Empire Strikes Back is a perfect illustration of that. Picking up where A New Hope ended, the film intensifies the conflict and shows our heroes becoming more experienced fighters. However, the movie primarily focuses on demonstrating the Empire’s true villainy and concludes with a rather unsettling cliffhanger.

The movie begins with a thrilling battle between the Empire and Rebel forces on the icy planet Hoth. This scene is a standout moment in the entire series, vividly showing the Empire’s strength as massive AT-AT walkers attack the Rebel base, Echo Base. It was the first large-scale ground battle in the films, and remains incredibly memorable even today.

Despite its generally dark tone, The Empire Strikes Back offers a glimmer of hope through Luke’s training with Yoda. It also features the unforgettable scene where Darth Vader reveals he is Luke’s father. This film is a fantastic sequel and many still consider it the best in the Star Wars saga, and one of the greatest sequels of all time.
