Amandaland’s Joanna Lumley teases Jennifer Saunders reunion: ‘As far from Edina and Patsy as you can imagine’

Everyone is really excited for Amandaland’s first Christmas special! After the show’s hugely successful first season, which both critics and viewers loved, expectations are high – and we’re guessing there will be plenty of Christmas trees!

Now that Jennifer Saunders is joining the Christmas special – and reuniting with Joanna Lumley on screen for the first time since their ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ days – it’s become the most anticipated show of the season.

I’m really excited about this new film! Apparently, Saunders is playing Joan, Felicity’s sister, and she’s hosting everyone at her country home. The idea is that Amanda, the character, is hoping it’ll feel like the Christmases she remembers as a kid, but it sounds like she’s finding it tough to recapture that special feeling – the synopsis says she ‘struggles to recreate’ it, which is relatable, honestly!

Lucy Punch, who plays Amanda, praised Jennifer Saunders, calling every scene she was in “magnificent” and “a hilarious delight.” She added that the scenes between Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley were even more enjoyable.

But can viewers expect Edina and Patsy 2.0?

Lumley explained they played characters very different from Edina and Patsy. However, viewers can still anticipate a lot of funny banter, as Felicity finds her sister’s cheerful attitude increasingly annoying.

While Felicity was upset, the rest of the cast actually enjoyed working with her, with one member specifically saying they ‘loved having her there, especially me,’ and that the set felt empty after she left following the Christmas episode.

Philippa Dunne, who played Anne, said the Christmas special episode was a particular highlight for her during filming.

It was a dream job – a hilarious script with a brilliant cast, a gorgeous, festive house in the countryside, singing carols in the rainy night, and the chance to finally work with Jennifer Saunders, who’s been a career goal of mine for ages.

“I’ll have fond memories of it forever.”

In October it was also announced that production had begun on Amandaland season 2.

Honestly, as a big fan, it was just great to hear Holly Walsh and Laurence Rickard say how much they loved being back filming in South Harlesden. It really made me smile!

We’ve spent the last six months learning about Brent Council’s rules on illegal dumping, practicing an Irish accent for a character, and writing the script. Now we’re thrilled to finally start filming with our fantastic cast!

The first season centered around Punch, a popular and confident woman, who moved to South Harlesden after getting divorced. She faced several difficulties adjusting to her new life, including having to work in retail and a fast-moving romance that almost ended in another failed marriage.

Is a new relationship brewing between Anne and her neighbor, Mal? And what other troubles will push Anne to her breaking point?
