The 2026 Winter Olympics recently concluded, and as with many past games, anime made an appearance. Following several gold medals for the United States, athletes celebrated in memorable ways. American gold medalist Kim Alisa Liu, in a surprising interview, discussed her passion for anime, specifically the horror genre. Despite a relatively limited selection of scary anime, she shared which chilling stories she enjoys.
Alisa Liu, the American figure skater who recently won gold in both team and individual events, is a huge fan of horror anime. In a recent interview with Overtime, she talked about her favorite series, including the gory and suspenseful Another. She also mentioned enjoying Nana and previously reading works by Junji Ito. Currently, she’s especially into Chainsaw Man, and even joked that her goal at the competition in Milan is to finish the series and share her love for the character Pochita with everyone.
The Horror of Anime & Sports
I’ve noticed that while anime loves both sports and horror, you don’t often see them combined. We get a lot of sports anime – shows like Blue Lock, Haikyu!!, and Slam Dunk are always popular. Horror anime aren’t quite as common, but there are still some really impactful, darker stories out there.
Junji Ito is widely celebrated as a horror master in the world of anime, and rightfully so. His manga stories have become increasingly popular, with series like The Junji Ito Collection, Junji Ito’s Maniac: Japanese Tales of The Macabre, and Uzumaki leaving a lasting impression on viewers. Ito’s work in anime isn’t stopping there – a new adaptation called Crimson is coming soon, bringing together some of his most terrifying stories. Although a release date hasn’t been announced yet, fans are eagerly anticipating this fresh take on his creations.
A live-action adaptation of Junji Ito’s work is coming to Netflix later this year with a series called Bloody Smart. Produced in Taiwan, the show will combine many of Ito’s iconic monsters and creatures into a single story, though the specifics of how they’ll all connect are still unknown.
