Man, ever since the Switch 2 launched, it feels like all my old favorites are getting updated! From Nintendo’s own games like Animal Crossing to awesome indies like Stardew Valley, everyone’s releasing a Switch 2 version. And today, totally out of the blue, one of the most popular indie games from the last few years just dropped its own update for the new console. It’s kinda crazy how many are coming out!
A version of the popular card game Balatro is now available for the Nintendo Switch 2. It first appeared in the German eShop but is now available to US customers as well. Players who already own Balatro on the original Switch can upgrade for free. New players can purchase the Switch 2 version for $14.99, currently discounted by 20%. This release is a bit different from other Switch 2 games that have been launched so far.
Balatro Arrives on Switch 2, But You’ll Have to Start Over to Play It

Released in February 2024, Balatro has quickly become a favorite indie game of the last ten years. It’s a fast-paced poker-inspired game with roguelike elements that’s captivated players on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and mobile devices. Now, an enhanced version is available for the new Switch 2 console.
Balatro has been out on Nintendo Switch since 2024, so a lot of players have already put considerable time into the game. While an upgrade to the game on the new Nintendo Switch 2 is available for free, many users are finding that their saved progress doesn’t transfer over. It seems the Switch 2 version of Balatro makes players start a new game from the beginning. It’s currently unclear if this is intentional or a bug, and the developers at PlayStack haven’t yet commented on the issue.
The Switch 2 version of Balatro installs as a new game and doesn’t allow you to carry over your saved progress. However, it does include improvements like mouse control and a smoother frame rate of 60fps. Aside from these changes, the gameplay and content are largely the same as other Switch 2 versions released recently. Just be aware that you won’t be able to transfer your existing saves when you upgrade.

Some players in the US are reporting they can now install the updated version of Balatro, but it hasn’t appeared in the US eShop for me yet. It is available in other regions, so it should be coming to the US soon. The game’s description doesn’t mention any fixes for save file problems or detail what’s new in this version. Players who’ve already updated are sharing what’s been improved. Hopefully, the Balatro team will soon let us know if the save file issue is intentional or a bug.
Now that Balatro is available on the Switch 2, are you planning to play it? Share your thoughts and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
