Amy Grant Shares Husband’s Surprising Advice on Brain Injury Recovery

Amy Grant isn’t taking every heartbeat for granted.

Country singer Amy Grant says her husband, Vince Gill, helped her see life in a new way after a bike accident in 2022. The accident caused a traumatic brain injury and resulted in memory loss.

I was really struck by something Amy shared on NPR’s Wild Card recently. She was talking about how incredibly quiet everything was while she was recovering, and she remembered turning to Vince and wondering if that quiet – that limited experience – was all she’d ever get back. It was a really raw and honest moment, and it really stuck with me.

The 65-year-old explained that she often feels disconnected from the world, as if she’s observing from a distance and always a little slow to react. She described it as feeling ‘three steps behind’ everyone else, and said that delay is simply how she processes things.

Vince, who shares 25-year-old daughter Corrina Grant Gill with Amy, responded by saying, “Amy, everyone faces challenges. Even someone incredibly talented, like a brilliant musician, could suddenly lose their ability. You just have to accept what life gives you and make the best of it.”

Amy started making music again in 2023 after taking a long break. She wasn’t hesitant to ask for assistance when her health made it difficult to be creative.

The six-time Grammy winner explained that they felt out of practice with songwriting. It was easier to collaborate with new people, simply sharing lyrics and asking for musical contributions, because they were struggling to develop the music themselves.

Amy is grateful for the incredible support she received, which helped bring her new album, The Me That Remains, to life.

“Music,” she added, “it’s a great shoehorn to get you out of a bad mood.”

Over the past few years, Amy has faced a number of health challenges, including a brain injury. She had open-heart surgery in 2021, and then in 2024, doctors removed a cyst from her throat.

Still, she kept her head high through it all.

“I feel really good,” she told TopMob News in a 2023 interview. “I anticipate just getting better.”

Lupita Nyong’o, known for her role in 12 Years a Slave, received a diagnosis of uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus—in 2014, the same year she won an Academy Award for her performance in the film.

She didn’t reveal her diagnosis until 2025, sharing on Instagram that she had privately struggled with the condition for over ten years.

Growing up, I was always told that periods were supposed to hurt – that pain was just something women had to deal with. It felt like I was going through this really difficult experience all by myself, and it’s something so many of us share. It’s frustrating to think we’ve been conditioned to just accept being in pain each month.

In July 2025, the actress from Daisy Jones & The Six revealed she’d been hospitalized for a hernia. This happened because she’d been wearing pants that were too tight, which caused a gap to form in her abdominal muscles.

Someone messaged Suki on X (formerly Twitter) asking why she hadn’t tweeted in a while. Suki jokingly replied, explaining she’d been secretly dealing with a hernia caused by wearing very tight pants six months prior and hadn’t wanted to mention it.

A former contestant on The Bachelor went to the hospital because of severe back pain. He described being in so much pain that he had to crawl on his hands and knees, and the pain worsened during a recent RV trip with a friend.

He described a lingering tingling sensation in his knees and toes, saying it was “crazy” even weeks after the initial issue. He explained that just a month prior, he was able to squat 295 pounds, but now he can’t even do a single squat or stand on one leg without falling. He compared the feeling to having a stroke.

But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, “We’re on the mend.”

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, even though it can be harsh, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffier” and receiving critical comments online, doctors began commenting on interviews, suggesting she might have Cushing syndrome – a condition often caused by high cortisol levels or steroid injections. This prompted Amy to realize she’d been getting steroid injections after a breast reduction and C-section. She wouldn’t have known about the condition without the online attention. Thankfully, Amy has since learned she has a form of Cushing syndrome that will resolve on its own, and she’s happy to be healthy.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly life can change. Recently, my son, who plays in the AHL, had a scary incident on the ice. In December 2024, he was unfortunately cut by a skate during a game and needed 25 stitches. Thankfully, he made a full recovery, but it was a deeply unsettling experience. As a parent, I can honestly say it’s something no one should ever have to go through – it was a huge relief to see him okay.

In March 2022, Hailey Bieber experienced a frightening health scare while having breakfast with her husband, Justin Bieber. She suddenly started having stroke-like symptoms, unable to speak and experiencing drooping on the right side of her face. Although these symptoms eventually subsided, she went to the hospital for tests. Doctors discovered she had a small blood clot in her brain, which they identified as a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack). Further investigation at UCLA revealed Hailey had a hole in her heart called a patent foramen ovale (PFO). This hole allowed the blood clot to travel to her brain, causing the TIA. Hailey has since undergone a successful procedure to close the PFO and is now doing well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also went through a difficult time. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a condition that caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the remaining dates of his Justice World Tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained the virus affected nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also shared that it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to eat.

Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away. Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well, and while the situation had been frightening and unexpected, he was going to be okay and was thankfully doing much better.

Jamie Foxx recently shared details about the serious health scare he experienced in April 2023, which he had initially kept private. In his 2024 Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, he explained that he suffered from a severe headache one day and lost consciousness before he could even take an aspirin. He doesn’t remember the following 20 days.

Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, was worried and took him to the hospital. Doctors discovered he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke.

After surgery, Jamie woke up in a wheelchair on May 4th, unable to walk. He then traveled to Chicago for extensive rehabilitation and therapy. He expressed deep gratitude for the prayers he received, saying he needed every single one.

The reality TV star shared that she briefly stopped breathing while running a mile during the first challenge on the NBC show.

She shared on the show Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser that her memory of the event was fragmented. She recalled hearing a helicopter, feeling like she was floating, and then seeing her grandfather. After that, she remembered only darkness, followed by light, leading her to realize she had died that day.

She explained that her organs were failing. She hadn’t known she had rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the body essentially begins to shut down.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, revealed a harrowing health battle in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker. While filming the series, she experienced a sudden, severe headache during a gym workout. She described feeling violently ill and realizing something was seriously wrong with her brain.

A hospital scan revealed she had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage – a life-threatening stroke caused by bleeding around the brain – due to a ruptured aneurysm. She immediately underwent surgery to repair it, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she temporarily lost her ability to speak, often muttering incoherently.

Though she was discharged after a month, a 2013 scan revealed the aneurysm had grown and required a second surgery. This procedure was unsuccessful, leading to a major bleed and a precarious chance of survival. Doctors had to perform a more invasive surgery, accessing her brain directly through her skull.

Fortunately, Emilia Clarke is now fully recovered and says she is “at a hundred per cent.”

In a September 2024 podcast interview, she revealed she experienced hearing loss, debilitating fatigue, and constant stomach pain. She described a confusing process of receiving conflicting diagnoses from different doctors. Determined to find answers, Woodley, who has a background in herbalism, sought help from both traditional doctors and alternative healers.

This health journey lasted a full decade and led to deeper issues. She realized her physical discomfort triggered anxieties around food and ultimately contributed to body dysmorphia and questions about her identity and self-worth.

Fortunately, after years of addressing both her physical and mental well-being, Shailene is now healthy and doing well. She expressed immense gratitude for her recovery and feeling comfortable in her own skin.
